Underwater lighting #21
Has anyone used underwater lighting?

I'm not thinking glaringly bright unnaturally colourful lighting...

I am hoping that there is a nice subtle 'backlighting' method of showing up my beautiful bogwood from behind.

Has anyone come across a tasteful way to do this? Silly question probably, but has anyone set up a tube on the back of the bank to shine through the glass?

Will underwater lighting be unfair to shy fish? Or could I combine it with nice dark areas for them?

Exploring lots of options just now and got lots of questions to ask...

Thanks folks!

Re: What fish to go for?! #22
... Which leads to yet another question!

Does anyone know of anywhere to get live food mail order/online?

I can't get it readily here so would like to find a way to get a regular supply. I will supplement this with beef heart??? If that meets your approval?!

I will spare the poor little cardinals, don't worry!

Re: Hagen natural plant system #24
It works!

Moved the end to the right place and within ten minutes there were bubbles!

So hopefully my leaves will stop turning brown soon...

... Or am I being too optimistic?!

Thank you!

Re: What fish to go for?! #25
Okay folks!

Will drop the cardinals - I knew they were bigger than neons so thought they would be okay...

Any other larger shoalers you can suggest? From South America?

Thanks, Cristina

What fish to go for?! #26
Hi folks

Am just pondering my options for fish for my new 55 gallon set up... How does this sound to you?

- 2-3 pairs of the silver & black striped angel fish
- pair of pimelodus pictus
- shoal of cardinal tetras - will start off with 10 or so and build up that number if they seem to be doing okay (haven't managed to maintain a decent shoal in the past, but new water may help)
- a big plec!

A plec is a must! And the angel fish are the main feature.

Will the other fish go alongside these? Anything else you recommend for helping to clean up, etc.

Was very tempted by a pair of Kribensis (most amazing little fish to watch), but I like the Amazonian theme running with the other fish... But we live in a multicultural society these days!

Anyway - thoughts please!

Re: Hagen natural plant system #27
Ahh - that makes sense - I know what I have done wrong! I have the tube protruding below the diffuser, so it's not getting the chance to go up the 'ladder' as it were... Will I be able to adjust it without redoing the whole set up, or would you recommend starting from scratch again?

I feel a tad silly if this is all that's wrong, but also glad if I have found a way to make it work!

Re: Hagen natural plant system #28
Thanks again Jaguar!

I did put it in straight from the tap, but will try your suggestion... I did follow the instructions to the letter, and have set it up for a second time as nothing was happening after a week or so.

Are the bubbles obvious?

Hagen natural plant system #29
I have purchased two of these units for my planted aquarium, and would like to hear from anyone else who has used them:

http://www.hagen.com/uk/aquatic/addinfo/co2system.html

From what I can see, they aren't doing anything! I can't see any bubbles and my plants aren't exactly thriving.

Has anyone used them and actually seen the bubbles?!

Thanks

Re: Reporting animal cruelty #30
Hi there

Although I have not made any complaints about fish, formally, I can give you a little inside knowledge.

My Dad is an SSPCA inspector, who has dealt with many complaints about fish. However, I think he is unique in his understanding of fish keeping and the basics required for keeping fish alive and healthy - other inspectors may not take fish problems so seriously. If they did then fishfarming would be in trouble!

They wouldn't be able to tell you more on the phone as it is call operators who are not trained to know what is and isn't acceptable.

You are right that it is often down to ignorance - so perhaps giving these people information on how to keep fish would be helpful, although I would hope that this is what the RSPCA will do.

I doubt they would 'seize' the fish or take any further action, except to educate them and warn them that they will visit again.

It's so hard.

Hope they are in better condition next time you visit... You have done the right thing.
