Re: Question About Cycling New Tank #21
Ok that's great, I'll keep it topped up to 4 ppm, many thanks.

I think I'm ok stocking wise...If all goes to plan 42 cm of adult fish in 64l tank (60l with gravel etc.) and all small fish (Galaxy; neon green rasbora; & neon green tetra). That's by no means set in stone by either species or quantity although I've no intention of going over 42 cm and even then they'll be going in slowly.

Readings continue to look to be going the right way. 2 ppm NH3/NH4 & 2 PPM NO2 this afternoon.

One more small worry though, I checked my tap water today. All is good other than it's coming out the tap with 20 ppm Nitrates. Clearly I'm never going to get the level below 20 using my tap water so I'm looking at mineral/ spring alternatives at the moment.

Re: Question About Cycling New Tank #22
Hi Fishlady

Thanks for that; both high & low ammonia was actually what I wanted to experiment with. Something like running with 1 ppm (to keep the bacteria busy) and then topping up to 3-4 ppm to see how long after and what levels of nitrites & nitrates I get from it but probably won't bother now in case I manage to mess it all up.

Does that also mean I should watch how much ammonia I dose with now? I topped up to 4 ppm again yesterday after getting the 2 ppm ammonia & 0.25 nitrite readings (incidentally it read 4 ppm this morning with 0.5 nitrites).

Just wondering if I should hold the ammonia at a lower level now its all started (maybe 2 ppm)?

Re: Question About Cycling New Tank #23
Yes, very happy it's happening...

I realise I'm still a long way off from getting fish anywhere near the tank and to be honest even once I'm 100% certain it's fully cycled I intend to run some what if scenarios with the ammonia so I know exactly what to do if I should into any problems later.

Thanks for the advice.

Re: Question About Cycling New Tank #24
Hi James

Thanks for the reply.

I checked the ammonia & nitrites when I got home from work (2 ppm & 0.25 ppm respectively).

And the cloudiness has completely gone.

I'm going to top off the ammonia again as I don't want to starve my lovely new bacteria!!

Re: Newbie looking to change filters #25
Well as you've said internal to internal people use the old media but not sure if that would be possible with an external.

I guess the other option is to run the filters in tandem for a few weeks.

Sorry not sure I understand the question re the heater. Why would a filter change mean you might need a new heater?

Question About Cycling New Tank #26
So it's a 64l tank that I'm setting up.

New everything for it (no fish yet of course) and I started the fishless cycling on Saturday using ammonia & API Quick Start.

Everything was very well rinsed before going into the tank.

Dosed with ammonia up to 4 ppm; cranked the heat up to 27 C; and full bubbles. I can see the ammonia levels are starting to fall already (darker than 2 ppm but not as dark as 4 ppm this morning).

I have noticed a very slight cloudiness to the water though (I don't think its air bubbles) and I assume this is the bacteria blooming. As such is it actually a good sign (for the moment at least)?

It just all seems to have happened very quickly? Is this normal?

I've not checked Nitrites yet as I was going to wait until the ammonia dropped to 1-2 ppm before doing so.

Many thanks

Fritz

Re: Empty 60l tank, what to stock - Inspiration Needed #27
Hey thanks for the link, very much appreciated.

As it happens I was visiting my mum today (she lives in Bexhill) and we stumbled across an aquarium shop in a Hillier garden centre, They had the Galaxy & Green tetra in stock and told me if I gave him a few days notice he could get the green rasboras too.
Still not completely decided on what I want to put in ther ehtough.

Lots of time to wait yet though

Re: Empty 60l tank, what to stock - Inspiration Needed #28
So I've started the tank up. Bit of an anti-climax now while I wait to see how the levels settle out.

Had a browse through a few aquarium shops today and got a few more ideas but nothing that's really leaping out. I was trying to find some Green Rasboras too look at but couldn't find any and can only find yellow online.

Do you have a link to where I can check some out?

Re: Empty 60l tank, what to stock - Inspiration Needed #29
Just a thought are the Neon & galaxy rasboras close enough species wise to shoal together?

Still open to other ideas though as I'm a long way off from buying the fish yet but it would be nice to a good idea so I can set the tank up correctly from the start (landscaping wise I mean)

Re: Empty 60l tank, what to stock - Inspiration Needed #30
Hmm...Thought I'd replied already but it seems to have disappeared.

Anyway that tank looks absolutely stunning. I'll be reading up a little more on them.

Do you know if all those fish mentioned are shoaling fish? If so I assume the minimum I should keep would be 6 of each, which would mean 18 fish in a 60l tank (well 65l but after allowing for gravel etc. about 60L) if I went with all three. That sounds like a lot to me although I can see that these are only small fish.

Might I be better off dropping one species and maybe push the numbers of the other two up slightly?

Fritz
