Re: Cycle + #161
Hey fishy-fishy

Check out Hagen's own FAQ for a bit of info:
http://www.hagen.com/uk/aquatic/faq.cfm

I've also emailed them for a bit more info to put our fears to rest (or confirm them that it doesnt actually do anything!)

Re: Cycle + #162
Just thought I should jump in with a few points:

Java Plants seem to have had a few bad experiences with customers on this forum. (see some threads on the Aquarium Plants section of the forum).
They may be good now though, but on the same thread, there were very good reports about Greenline Aquatics. Havent bought from either so cant say from my own experience - just passing on what Ive heard.

As for Nutrafin Cycle, I think its pretty good.
I got rid of all Ammonia in my tank in about 4 days, and Im pretty sure this was down to the Cycle, as I did nothing else out of the ordinary.

The reason I think people dont rate these products is they dont understand how bacteria can stay alive when either a) there is no food source, b) there is no oxygen source.

The explanation is that the bacteria (and they are bacteria in Cycle, not enzymes) are held in a form called 'flocs'. These are dormant (but still alive) bacteria colonies which are reactivated on contact with water... perhaps something like a hedgehog who can sleep all winter without eating and only breathing once per minute, yet awaken in spring to go about his hedgehoggy business

There is another product called BioSpira which contains NitroSpira (Cycle contains Nitrobacter, among others) and nitrospira may be better at converting Nitrite. BioSpira also needs refridgerated so if you are uncomfortable using a dormant solution (like CYcle) you could use BioSpira.

One final point - dont expect these products to magically mature your tank in days. They are just an accellerant to speed things up and get you going. From my experience - its worked very well.
P.S. pfk reader survey also rated Cycle quite effectively.

Re: filters and air pumps #163
The only thing Im aware off is that in some articles relating to planted tanks, they say not to use an airstone as it allows CO2 to escape quicker from the water.
... not actually sure if this is correct though!

spray bar required? #164
Hi all

I have a Fluval 3+ internal cannister filter (700l/h) in my 75L tropical freshwater tank.

I have no fish yet (still cycling!) but would like to get the usual mix of tetras,danios,platys,d.gourami,etc.

What I would like advice on is whether or not I will need a spray bar on the filter nozzle?
At the moment, the filter is turned down to minimum flow output but I can see the current in the water (because of the plant leaves swaying). Will the current not be liked by my fishys?
Thanks!

Re: Household Ammonia information #166
No problem Goldy.
They are posting me a cost sheet so if it contains any further info, I'll be sure to post it on this thread.

Im just glad to be putting something back into this forum after all the great advice and chat Ive taken from it!

Household Ammonia information #167
Just thought I would post this information as it may be useful to some other fishkeepers:

"Enzo Household Ammonia"
£1 for 500ml bottle
9.5% ammonia
90.5% distilled water

It's readily available throughout UK, but is produced by Lausco Services in Wales (I phoned them today to get this info and they were very helpful).
Contact details are:
Lausco Services Ltd.
http://www.lauscoservices.co.uk
TEL: 01446 775577

I've been having great success with this ammonia during my current new tank fishless cycle (see other post in the Tropical forum) and as its pure ammonia I dont think I'll have to worry about any phosphates, chemicals, perfumes, etc.

Edit:
Got some more info through from Lausco today about the Ammonia:
PH = 13.0 - 14.0
RELATIVE DENSITY = 1.0 - 1.1
AQUATIC TOXICITY = LC50 96h < 1mg/l
VAPOUR PRESSURE = 760 MM Hg at 20 degress C.
COMPOSITION:
10% Ammonia Solution
Irritant, Xi (R36-37-38)
("not sure what those numbers above mean, but thought Id put it here for the boffins amongst us" )
