Breeding or Bullying? #131
Hi everyone,

My girlfriend and I have a 215l tank which we purchased some time ago which now houses 3x Orandas (A Redcap, A Blue and a Red) and they have been happily living together in the tank for almost a month now with no problems.

I have no idea of their age but they were purchased from a LFS and are approximately 1" - 1.5" in length now so still very small for Orandas, so I would assume they're relatively young.

My girlfriend was in a frenzied panic this morning as she noticed the Redcap Oranda darting around the tank, chasing the Blue Oranda relentlessly and in her words "sticking his nose up it's bum". I took a look myself and sure enough this is eactly what's happening and this is very out of character as they have been very docile up until now and not aggressive to each other at all. She was quite upset by this as the Blue looks exhausted and to make matters worse the Red Oranda has also joined in with the chasing as well, although not to the same extent as the Redcap.

My instincts tell me they are breeding, as no fin-nipping is taking place, just nudging & chasing (albeit rather fast & aggressive) and I've told my gf not to worry and that's it's just nature taking it's course - the Blue's belly also looks rather podgy so the clues are definately pointing to breeding I think.

Does it sound like breeding to you guys? I didn't actually think they would be mature enough yet but perhaps I'm wrong. And if they ARE breeding, is it going to be a problem long-term keeping what appears to be 2x males with 1x female? Will their relentless attempts to mate exhaust her and possibly kill her? And what about competition for the female between 2x males?

The tank has around 4 plants and I'm running an Eheim Classic 2217 filter.

Re: Best Filter for 3 Orandas in a 215l tank? #132
Great stuff, thanks.

I've been doing some more research and now have my eye on an Eheim Classic 2217 which looks ideal as I've read nothing but good things about this filter and it looks like it could also be suitable for a bigger tank should I upgrade in the future, so it has a "future proof" element to it too.

If anyone uses an Eheim 2217 and can let me know their experiences of this filter, good or bad then I would obviously be very grateful.

Thanks for the extra info Diadeb20, the Fluval's look good too, if I was going to go for one of those then I reckon a 404 would be best as that's rated for tanks at 400l.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Still searching around for some good filters and have several in my "watch list" on ebay but any links would of course be welcomed.

Re: Best Filter for 3 Orandas in a 215l tank? #134
Hi Suey2,

Thanks for the advice.

I must admit I'd never heard of those filters you mentioned but I've had a look on EBay and have seen a few bargain Rena's so I may go for the XP3 you mentioned and then perhaps I can always upgrade to an Eheim further down the line when I have a bit more money.

I actually meant to put this topic in "coldwater" rather than emergencies and didn't know how to move it so thanks for that.

Cheers

Re: Best Filter for 3 Orandas in a 215l tank? #136
Hi Violet,

Thanks for your quick reply, my thoughts confirmed then.

Not wanting to put any pressure on you but what would you recommend as a good external filter for this setup? I've been looking at the Eheim's / Fluvals but I have been blown away by the amount of different models & features etc, if you know of any other good makes then please let me know.

I think the Eheim Professional 2226 looks a good bet, stating it's suitable for tanks up to 350l but based on what you've just said would you recommend I went for a filter rated for tanks around 500l?

I always wonder how filter companies can state "suitable for aquariums up to 350l" when they have no idea of what fish you're planning to stock? I can only assume they base those figures on low stocks of small, low polluting fish.

As for ammonia, no I haven't been adding any - should I be?

Best Filter for 3 Orandas in a 215l tank? #137
Hi everyone,

I bought a second-hand 215l fish tank (L: 48", W:15", H:18") a couple of months ago which came with an old-style internal Fluval 4 filter (i.e not the "plus" version) - it also included gravel, a hood, lighting etc - basically everything to get started apart from fish & plants.

It's now all set up & planted with the filter running and has been left to cycle for a month but now I'm ready to add some fish.

I'm planning to keep just 3 Oranda's in this tank - from past experience I'm aware of how big these fish can get and I won't keep anymore than 3 (despite staff at my local fish store telling me I could keep 6+ Oranda's in this tank!).

My question is:-

Is the internal Fluval 4 going to be a good enough filter for a tank of this size, and perhaps more importantly will it be good enough for 3 Oranda's bearing in mind how polluting they can be? It's worth mentioning that the Oranda's will only be 1" - 2" from purchase.

I want to get this right first time and I've trawled through the internet relentlessly but I cannot find a definitive answer to this question and so I'm hoping to draw on the experience of you guys to help me out.

2 local fish stores both told me the Fluval 4 would be fine but then again they also told me that 6 Oranda's could live in my tank so I don't know what to believe!

Your help would be greatly appreciated
