Re: New pond syndrome! #11
The Nitrite is climbing again, quite quickly.

I'll do another water change today about 50%.

I think I'll also get some quick test strips as a double check.

Re: New pond syndrome! #12
It's an established pond with a new filter.

I done another water change today and it is now acceptable. I dread to think what the reading was at first.

For info:
The pond is 1200 litres, with fish and I'm now using a Blagdon Minipond 6000 filter with a Hozelock 2000 pump.

I was originally using one of the in pond all-in-one filters but it wasn't really up to the job. Constant cleaning. If I was upgrading an external filter, I would have swapped the bio media over, but obviously didn't have that option.

New pond syndrome! #13
After installing a new filter system a few weeks ago, I thought I'd better do a water quality test. I've been using bio start type additives by the way.

Anyway, the Nitrite levels were dangerously high so I quickly carried out a 90% water change with treated water and tested again. Still dangerously high. The colour is off the scale. Very dark indeed.

Should I do another water change or just wait for the bacteria to establish?

I tested my tap water too and that gives a result of 0.1 mg/l

Re: Planning a Pond #14
For those fish, you want a depth of 2-3 foot. 2 foot being the absolute minimum. Around the edges you can have a marginal shelf at a depth of 6 - 9 inches.

Re: Making a fibre-glass pond #15
Yes, it is possible and quite acceptable to use fibreglass to construct a pond.

It is a little more involved than normal fibreglassing as the gel coat must be mirror finish so as not to give too easy a foothold for the dreaded algae.

All standard pond constructions are suitable for glass fibre. You may also want to consider pond paints and rubber liners too.

Is there a specific reason you are thinking about fibreglass?

Re: Salt concentration. #16
I thought I would give a quick update to close this thread.

Some 10 or 12 days after refilling the pond with fresh (treated) water, the Orfe started feeding again and are now (3 weeks) feeding as happily as ever.

Experiment over - Results as people here expected.

Epic fail.

Re: Hair Algae in Pond! #17
The Hydra International product is safe for all fish and plants.

Depending on the chemistry of your water, it may go cloudy for a couple of days on first use, but after that it will be fine.

You may also get a layer of light foam, but that only lasts an hour or so.

I love this product. I use it in small maintenance doses weekly and have a completely blanket weed free pond.

Occasionally there is a regrowth, but a quick sprinkle of the granules kill that off rapidly.

Re: Pump recomendation please. #18
Thanks - I asked in the LFS when selecting the Titan pump.

Re: Hair Algae in Pond! #20
I use this product from Hydra International:

http://www.hydra-aqua.com/05a-pond---blanket-weed---quartz-2-c.asp

You can see the blanket weed dying and it will all be gone in 1 week!
