Re: New tank advice #611
Sorry, I meant that it will be fine for the size of tank as long as you don't overstock. Also, regarding nitrate, that is the final product of the cycle and won't go down, it will continue to rise so should be controlled by regular partial water changes - about 20% weekly. As long as nitrate is under 40 all is well.

Re: Stressed Amano shrimp #612
Sorry for the slow reply, I had an accident so haven’t been able to do much. As always, thank you Fishlady. I contacted my water provider who said my area is 13.3 dGh, so I guess I’ve learned the hard way that I can’t keep shrimp

I’m now just down to 2 shrimp, both seem to be merrily doing their shrimpy thing & generally are easy to spot regularly (so less hiding) No odd behaviour…. though today is my first water change since my accident (if my back holds out) as it’s been 10 days, so I’m hoping it doesn’t stress them out too much

plant identification and best substrate for them? #613
I am in the process of replacing my biorb tank with one that is more suitable for the fish i have. I have currently have these plants in my biorb which i have put in pots and wrapped with fabric to stop the substrate from getting in the filter and breaking it! i know this isnt ideal but it is a temporay soiution until my new tank is set up. It have been ordered and is on its way.

I want to make sure i get everything right this time as i feel bad for my fish and want them to have the best fishy life they can.

Can you please help me identify these plants and recommend the besat substrate for them?

I also have some moss balls and want to get a java fern. I will also be planting more plants in my tank as i want it to be as natural as possible for my fishy friends.

Thanks!

Re: New tank advice #614
Thank you.

You have said that the filter that comes with the tank will be adequate, does this mean that there are filters that will be better? If so can you please recommend a better one for the tank?

Re: Need help with sick goldfish please. Lump, Scales protruding, Hemorrhaging. #615
I tried waterlife Myxazin and there was no improvement, I decided to try kanaplex next, he's on day 3 and still getting worse

Re: New tank advice #616
Yes that tank will be OK at a pinch and the filter should be adequate. You will be able to add a few more a couple of weeks after you move the existing fish in (once cycled). I wouldn't create a great deal of flow as your other fish may not like it too turbulent (the platy).

Re: New tank advice #617
I have measured the space the tank can go in and I can fit an 80cm tank in it. Will this be OK for the danios? I know its not ideal but it's the biggest one that will fit in the space. With that size tank will we be able to add a couple more to make them happier or is it best not to?
I have read that they like to swim in a current so I am happy to purchase something to create a current for them. If I was to do that would the other fish still be OK?

Here is the tank I am thinking of getting

https://www.completeaquatics.co.uk/ciano-aqua-80-led-tank-black

Is the filter that comes with it suitable?

Thanks again for your help. I just want to get it right this time so the fish will be happy and healthy.

Oh also, I just did a water change yesterday so I don't know if doing another one will help the Nitrate levels? How else can I bring them down?

Re: New tank advice #619
If you use around 3ppm of ammonia to do your cycle you will be able to add the fish all together. Just test daily for the first few days after adding them to be on the safe side.

Re: New tank advice #620
Thank so much for responding!

I didn't cycle the tank before adding the fish as I wasn't aware I needed to do that. Poor fish!

I have a test kit already so will do a test in a bit and post the results.

When I eventually get the new tank do I cycle the water before adding plants etc? And once the cycle is complete can I add all of the fish I have in one go or do I need to do it in stages to make sure it doesn't upset the balance of the tank?
