Re: another pic of Iggy's bubbles

Found this on gas bubble disease

'Gas bubble' disease

'Gas-bubble' disease (which is uncommon) presents the opposite problem to hypoxia. It is caused by over-saturation of the water with air. During summer it is tempting to try and force as much oxygen as possible into the water but it is important to realise that at any given temperature there is a maximum amount of oxygen the water can naturally hold If this level is exceeded for example by forcing air into the water under pressure the water can become supersaturated with oxygen.

Given my earlier comments about the dangers of hypoxia, this may seem a desirable state of affairs but it isn't. If excess air is forced into water it will gradually come out of solution as the natural equilibrium is restored. This excess air may come out of solution in the fish's bloodstream.

Typical signs of which are visible air bubbles in the eyes, gills and sometimes in the skin. This problem can be detected by measuring total dissolved gases (DO, nitrogen, argon, dissolved carbon dioxide etc.) though the equipment required is expensive.

He is gorgeous! Looks like a golf ball with fins! Although it boggles the mind how a pearlscale can even be related to a common goldfish, so different

Re: another pic of Iggy's bubbles

We think it was 'gas bubble disease' - Goldy gives some information about it above Mr S also explained it to me 'idiot's guide' fashion!

Still not sure what caused it, but what happens is this:

Water is super-saturated with air (nitrogen mainly as air is mainly nitrogen) because there's been lots of aeration, for example (like an air-driven filter!).

The water conditions change, perhaps because of a weekly water change, but basically water that is *not* super-saturated (e.g. tap water?) is mixed with water that is super-saturated (i.e. the water in the tank already). So the water outside of the fish has less air dissolved in it that the water inside the fish, so the air tries to come out of the water that is inside the fish, appearing as bubbles under the skin and in the eyes, etc. and are the symptoms of gas bubble disease. This is what SCUBA divers call 'the bends'. If the bubbles come out in the bloodstream of diver or fish, it can be fatal.

Whilst it might seem counter-intuitive (i.e. wrong!), in order to effect a cure you must first restore the super-saturated water, i.e. try and get as much air into the water as possible, so that the water outside of the fish has the same or greater level of air dissolved in it than the water inside the fish. This is why adding an airstone is advised. At this point, the bubbles on the fish should reduce and go away. It is only then (and I have not seen this further step advised in any articles, only the steps about further aeration) that you *slowly* reduce the amount of aeration that the tank water and any water you replace in the tank, receives. Maybe over a week or so.

Sadly Iggy died in December 2006, we couldn't get rid of the bubbles plus he had other problems. Sorry you lost yours too

He had an air-driven filter which I later used for some goldfish fry but two of them also developed bubbles and died so maybe there is a link there.

Re: another pic of Iggy's bubbles

I am sooo sorry to hear about Iggy.

Yeah, I researched GBD while she was alive and most said that was probably not the cause.. google "my pearlscale has gas bubble disease?!"

I have an airstone in the tank and they kept coming and going.Only on the night before she died I turned the bubbles off because the LFS said it may be too much bubble? (I am so confused) I also use a HOB filter so not sure if that would have been the culprit..

I think in the end she may have died of something else. Constipation?

My biggest worry is finding the reason and not letting it happen again to my lil Bob.. (moor)

Should I not keep his airstone on?? Could that of also been a problem.. before she started getting the bubbles, I had the bubbles go off at night so they didn't have so much water movement. Thought it would help them sleep..

Re: another pic of Iggy's bubbles

Just a guess but think it was likely water related the reason your fish died please read the link below as it may shed some light on what went wrong
