General Information: Native to Florida and finding a home in marshes, rivers, floodplains and ditches these are one of the toughest, most adaptable fish. Stout body with stripes and spots. Olive green with brown back and silver and red spots. A larger dark spot dominates the middle of the side.
Tank Requirements: Although not large or messy fish they do seem bright and adventurous. In a smaller tank their physical needs can be met, but they will quickly become bored.
Diet Requirements: Mainly vegetarian, they are excellent algae eaters.
Compatibility: Very territorial when nesting which makes them unsuitable for homing with many fish unless the aquarium is very large. Watch for fin-nipping.
Recommendations: Keep as a matched pair or shoal in a large tank or just a single male as they can be really grumpy. Ideals : 19-22C : ph 7.5-8.0 : Current - Slow.
Common Problems: Males may get very territorial and agressive during breeding and nesting. Even towards the female. Individuals can also be bad tempered fin-nipping bullies.
Similar Species: None known.
Sexing: The female carries a dark dot on the dorsal fin.
Breeding: Females lay eggs in a crater in the substrate, males protect the nest. To breed, move them to their own heavily planted tank with fine gravel substrate and remove the female after laying.
