General Information: The Shubunkin also called the Calico Goldfish is very much like the Comet Goldfish, but is a lot more colourful with blue, red, brown, orange and yellow colours combined with black spots – “Calico colours”.
Tank Requirements: See Minimum Tank Volume and Minimum Tank Size above. The aquarium should be decorated and provide the Shubunkin Goldfish with heavily planted areas as well as open areas for swimming.
Diet Requirements: These fish are omnivorous - they will eat pellets/flake, green foods and most live foods such as bloodworm and daphnia.
Compatibility: Common Goldfish, Comets. Also Golden/Blue Orf and Koi when kept in a pond.
Recommendations: The Shubunkin Goldfish, like the Common Single Tail Goldfish is best suited to ponds due to its growth potential, but can be kept in an aquarium as long as you can provide it with enough swimming space.
Common Problems: Stunting due to being kept in small tanks and ponds.
Similar Species: Bristol Shubunkin, Comet
Sexing: Males have white spots on their gill plates and front edge of pectoral fins: breeding tubercles. These should not be confused with the disease white spot. Females develop a deeper body and have a larger vent (just before the anal fin) than the males.
Breeding: Will breed readily during the late Spring and Summer months. Parents will eat their own eggs and fry so best removed if kept in a tank.
