General Information: A Redcap Oranda is an Oranda which is white apart from its hood/wen, which is completely red like a strawberry. Unlike other Orandas the cap is confined to the top of the head. They make a great community fish for the coldwater aquarium and are very sociable when kept with similar tank mates.
Tank Requirements: Fancy Goldfish, given correct conditions can grow very large, which means they are not suitable long term for small aquaria. See Minimum Tank Volume and Minimum Tank Size above.
Diet Requirements: Goldfish are omnivorous - they will eat pellets/flake, green foods and most live foods such as bloodworm.
Compatibility: Other Fancies such as Fantails.
Recommendations: It is best to keep Fancy Goldfish with other coldwater fish that will not nip their fins and fish that will be comfortable living in the slightly warmer temperatures that Fancy Goldfish prefer.
Common Problems: Tend to suffer with swim bladder problems due to their body shape. The hood of these fish is subject to infection from debris, bacteria, and fungi that settle in the tiny folds.
Similar Species: Gold Oranda, Calico Oranda, Ranchu Lionhead Fantail, Ryukin, Blackmoor, Veiltail.
Sexing: Males have white spots on their gill plates and front edge of pectoral fins: breeding tubercles. These should not be confused with the disease white spot. Females develop a deeper body and have a larger vent (just before the anal fin) than the males.
Breeding: If they are well cared for Goldfish will breed readily when they are about 2 years old regardless of their size. Sadly parents will eat their own eggs and fry so best removed to a separate tank.
