Regal Tang
Alternative Name(s): Palette Surgeonfish, Hippo Tang, Blue Tang, Blue Surgeonfish
Scientific Name(s): Paracanthus hepatus (family; Acanthuridae)
Category: Marine Fish
Difficulty:
Maximum Size: 31cms
Minimum Tank Volume: 450 litres
Minimum Tank Size: 100 Gallons
Water Temperature Range: 22-26°C

General Information: Beautiful and powerful fish, but very prone to parasites and lateral line erosion. Quarantine, UV, perfect water quality and excellent nutrition are required. Should not be kept with other Tangs.
Tank Requirements: SALINITY SG: 1.020 - 1.025 Reef or fish only tank with plenty of hiding spots and swimming space to cater for this fishes slightly paranoid and skittish nature.
Diet Requirements: Most foods including vegetable matter, but feed mainly meaty marine foods for this Tang to satisfy its natural zooplankton diet. Finely chopped shrimp, mysid shrimp and vitamin enriched brine shrimp/krill.
Compatibility: Quarrelsome with its own kind but generally friendly. Can be territorial with slow predators.
Recommendations: Very susceptible to mental stress as well as parasites. Use UV and full quarantine on all fish from the start of the tank.
Common Problems: Ich (whitespot) can be a problem and should be taken care of in quarantine. White spots and pale colours can appear as a reaction to poor nutrition or water quality and are then unrelated to Ich.
Similar Species: Most other Tangs are similar in appearance, but behaviour and feeding can be very different.
Sexing: It is not possible to sex these fish visually.
Breeding: Would require a tank at least 10'x6' to house more than one. If they pair they require 8-10' of water depth to complete the mating ritual.
