Serpae Tetra
Alternative Name(s):
Scientific Name(s): Hyphessobrycon eques
Category: Tropical
Difficulty:
Maximum Size: 4cms
Minimum Tank Volume: 85 litres
Minimum Tank Size: 30" x 15" x 12"
Water Temperature Range: 23-28°C
Water pH Range: 5.5-7.5
Water Hardness Range: 5-20 dGH

General Information: Colourful, adaptable and very active Tetra. Keep in larger shoals of more than 6 to minimise its propensity for fin-nipping. Don't keep with Angels, Gouramis or other slow-moving fish with long or trailing fins as they will be nibbled by these Tetras.
Tank Requirements: Works well in either a typical Amazon blackwater biotope or a heavily planted set up. Either of these will bring out the stunning colour of this fish.
Diet Requirements: Naturally feeds on small invertebrates, but is unfussy in the aquarium and will eat most foods. Supplement quality flake/pellets with regular feedings of small live/frozen foods.
Compatibility: Tank mates need to be robust and competitive. Shy fish will lose out at feeding time, long finned species will suffer damage. Best with Cories, similar sized Tetras, Barbs, Rainbowfish
Recommendations:
Common Problems: Nippy and an aggressive feeder so choose tank mates with care and keep shoal size large.
Similar Species: Many similar sized Tetra in the Hyphessobrycon genus, most are less aggressive than these.
Sexing: Female is larger-bodied than male. Male has completely black dorsal.
Breeding: Similar to most Tetras - will eat eggs and fry so remove adults after spawning. Eggs and young fry are light-sensitive and should initially be kept in the dark.
