General Information: These secretive fish are a mainly nocturnal species and like plenty of cover in the form of plants, bogwood and rocks. They can reach about 10cms in length and are eel shaped, with light and dark brown stripes (rings) and have three pairs of barbels. Kuhlis need a mature setup and shouldn't be added to a new setup.
Tank Requirements: Require a mature set up and sand substrate as they feed primarily by sifting sand.
Diet Requirements: Kuhlis will eat most foods offered, but should receive regular small live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm in addition to a basic diet of quality flake/pellet .
Compatibility: Best kept as a group of four or more in combination with peaceful fish who prefer the mid and upper water regions. Shoaling fish such as Rasboras will give the Kuhlis more confidence to spend time out and about.
Recommendations: Substrate should be sand to prevent barbel damage, plenty of hiding places and plants.
Common Problems: Have been found in living inside filters so be aware when cleaning your filter. Sensitive to certain meds and a lower dosage may be required for their safety. Check manufacturer's directions carefully.
Similar Species: Large group of similar species in the Kuhlii group.
Sexing: Females generally larger and heavier-bodied than males and will become plumper when carrying eggs. Mature males have a clearly thicker and branched first ray of the pectoral fin.
Breeding: There are claims that these have bred in home aquariums, but none validated.
