General Information: The Nile Puffer is a tropical freshwater pufferfish found in the river Nile and African basins. These fish have a wonderful personality and its very easy to form a bond with them.
Tank Requirements: This fish requires a large tank due to its potential maximum size of 43cm. It also needs its max length and a little more to turn successfully in a tank.
Diet Requirements: Snails, shellfish with shell on (prawns, crab legs, mussels etc), fresh or frozen bloodworm, earthworm.
Compatibility: Best housed alone as it is a very aggressive fish and any tankmates would need to be large and fast to avoid damage.
Recommendations: Recommend sand substrate to mimic the natural environment. These fish require a commitment as they can live for many years and due to their requirements can cost a lot of money to keep successfully.
Common Problems: Not giving enough food with shells, e.g. cockles to grind the teeth down leads to them growing through the lower mouth requiring a Vet's intervention.
Similar Species: Other fresh water puffers.
Sexing:
Breeding: Cannot be bred in the aquarium unless it is extremely large due to the aggressive response to fish of the same species. Breeding has been achieved in the right circumstances.
