General Information: A colour variant of the Three Spot Gourami this can be identified by its deep golden colour and dark wavy markings along the dorsal surface. The ventral surface is yellow/silver culminating in a broad anal fin running much of the length of the fish. The anal fin can be elaborately speckled and can have a blueish tint to the edge.
Tank Requirements: Planted tank with good open areas and floating plants for cover.
Diet Requirements: Benefits from a wide variety of foods including bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia complimenting a base of good quality flake.
Compatibility: Semi-aggressive. Males can be highly territorial and aggressive to their own species and other similiar species (dwarf gourami etc). Best kept with robust companions.
Recommendations: Gourami are labyrinth fish and need access to the water surface to breathe.
Common Problems:
Similar Species: Three Spot Gourami, Opaline Gourami and many other colour variants, plus other Gourami
Sexing: Males are easily recognised by a longer trailing dorsal fin (more pointed), whereas the female's dorsal fin is much more rounded.
Breeding: Golden Gourami males prepare a bubble nest, guide a female towards the nest and proceed to squeeze the eggs out of her. The males become highly protective of the nest.
