I originally put lots of java moss in the waterfall but it totally took over the back of the tank and made it very dark. The last straw was when it started growing string algae. Took it out and this is whats left.

I have been taking photos with my phone up till now but I actually have a real dedicated camera. Can't believe the difference in picture quality.

http://fibrecat.org/~leni/fishies/Bob.jpg

Bob loves to pose.

http://fibrecat.org/~leni/fishies/Danios.jpg

These guys are more challenging subjects! I got the Danios on Monday and so far no problems at all. Bob sulked for a day or so but the two ladies have been surprisingly chilled. I feel silly for spending so much time worrying about it now o0

http://fibrecat.org/~leni/fishies/The%20two%20terrors.jpg

The two ladies squaring off. Alice is the one who looks like shes winning, the one on the right is Eve. I tried to get a photo of Chris the bristlenose but he doesn't like the auto focus. When I learn how to use the manual settings I will get him :)

I apologize for the picture quality being even worse than usual.

Minor setback with the terrestrial plants basically starving the aquatic ones. I caught it in time so there is only minor damage. I have to either up my water changes or dose more fertilisers or quite possibly both. My nitrates are reading at 5ppm and the fish are their usual trouble making selves. Hopefully I will see a great improvement in plant growth once the macro ferts arrive.

I really want to up the planting density and then get a shoal of medium size fish, maybe Celebes Rainbows. (Please speak up if that sounds inappropriate)

The plants are definitely paying off.

My nitrates are down to 10-20 ppm. Got it tested in the LFS this time and we agreed definitely closer to 10. The lady was so suprised she even double checked it for me. Also pleased to say that the brown algae has totally gone. Have small patches of hair and green spot but nothing too bad touch wood.

Made a couple of changes to the left side, mostly for the benefit of my baby plec. He has spent the last few days pushing gravel about and making his new caves more comfy.

Just revamped my shrimp tank with a hang on the back filter to free up space for more shrimp inside the tank and more plants outside. Hoping to replicate the success of the big tank.

As you can see the tank is starting to come together, still loads of growing in to do but I am starting to see the finished shape.

The yucky brown algae is still there, especially on smaller leaved plants but is starting to recede. Im really hoping that it won't be replaced by thread algae or something.

I got a baby bristlenose from a local fish keeper. Hes called chris (not sure if that should be christopher or christine but we will find out as he grows.) It was a nerve wracking start with the poor thing being terrified of my existing fish, but hes definitely settled down now. Hes still skittish but has actually started hanging out on top of the heater with Bob. As you can see he has made short work of the algae on the glass and has just started on cleaning up the plants. I would post a picture of him but hes a bit camera shy.

http://clive.fibrecat.org/~leni/fishies/2012-03-31%2014.51.06.jpg

Not sure if I should be feeding him anything else as he is pooping unbelievably enormous amounts, so he cant be short of algae. I bought some courgette for him as his previous owner fed them some regularly.

Edit 03/04/12: New nitrate result. Had to double check to be sure it wasnt a fluke but nitrates are between 20 and 40ppm. Thats definitely below tap water levels.

http://clive.fibrecat.org/~leni/fishies/2012-03-28%2012.40.16.jpg

Lots of lovely new colourful plants! I decided to use the 3rd filter tray as well, previously only two filter trays had substrate. Was really pleased to see lots of new roots on the peace lilly I moved into the new tray.

http://clive.fibrecat.org/~leni/fishies/2012-03-28%2012.40.25.jpg

Lots of colour. I don't think I need any more verigated or non-green varieties now. Its suprisingly hard to find 'natural' looking plants that are documented as being easy to grow this way.

Hygrophillia guanensis, just starting to grow new emergent leaves. You can still see all the crinkly old aquatic ones but its not looking quite so dead. Not sure what to do with the baby spider plant. May move it to the other end.

Not much to report. Some of my hygrophilia grew all the way to the surface so Ive trimmed and replanted the tops. I got myself a lamp from ikea at the weekend so thats up on top of the lid. The bulb is a 9 wat energy saver 'daylight'(6500k)one. The peace lillies don't really need the extra light, but I have more bog plants on their way. I also was mis-sold a stem plant by my local fish shop. The shop assistant insisted it was 'low light' when but I got home every internet site says its very demanding and needs exceptionally high light levels to survive. As it stood no chance in the tank, I popped it in a pot on top. Its a bit crinkly looking but growing a few new leaves now so fingers crossed it will be a nice addition to the peace lilly jungle.

edit: forgot to say, I have 4 new nerite snails. Still fighting the horrible brown algae but the snails are definitely making a dent. I think I'm starting to get a handle on it.
