About 5 days after adding 3 Steel Blue Killifish i notived that my cherry barbs had bits of there tails missing. after posting on here i was advised my Fish lady (thanks) that it was Fin Rot as well as nipping.

Since then i started a course of the waterlife myaxine and have removed the 3 killifish but probably stupidly added 2 more cherry barbs and one female dwarf blue gourami.

I'm now on day 5 of the treatment and the Fin Rot still seems to be present in the Cherry Barbs (none others were affected). What should i do now???

I've just took reading and they are

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10/20
Temp 25

My tank is a 60 litre with 8 cherry barbs, 4 otos and 1 dwarf blue Gourami. i do a 25% water change every week though admitaddly i do struggle at hoovering the gravel - but do my best. The next water change is due on Monday

EDIT:- there is currently no airation but i am going to get some put in today - i trust that this will also help?

Hi Rob,

Repeat the treatment and see if it improves.

Keep an eye on the water quality as with the new Cherry Barbs and a DG you're a bit overstocked. You should really only have 24" max in your tank. 8 Cherries is 16", 1 DG is another 3 1/2" and 4 Otos is another 4 1/2" so you're at your absolute max and this is still a new tank. 2 more Cherries and a DG will be a heavier bioload than the Killis were as all three are depper bodied.

Ok thanks fish lady.

Do I need to atop the treatment for a day or anything or just carry on?
Should I be feeding them as normal?
My LDS said the the DG would only grow to 4cm as its a female is that not correct?

Will airating the water help?

Finish the course and do a partial water change then wait 24 hours and repeat the treatment.

Dwarf Gourami can get to 8cm (male) typical size in the aquarium is 7.5 cms male and 6 cms female

Hi All,

I'm now on the 2nd Course of myxazine (day 3) and the fin rot problem doesnt appear to be getting any better. It is still only affecting the cherry Barbs thought.

All have it on there tails and some even on there top fins now so it appears to be getting worse if anything.

My water Params are

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10 or 20

Please help as they dont really seem to be interested in food anymore either and they used to wait at the surface for it twice a day!

Hi ob,

We need to figure out the cause of this as well as finding a cure.

Can you check the tank pH please?
What temperature is the tank at?
Are there any ornaments or decor with sharp edges?
Is it possible the Cherry Barbs are nipping each other?

You mentioned you have trouble cleaning the gravel.....that needs to be done as if there's rotting food, plants or waste in the gravel it provides an ideal environment for the bacteria that cause fin rot to grow.

Can you just remind me what other occupants are in the tank before I recommend any further treatment?

Hi there

I'm assuming you have taken the carbon out of your filter?

Hi

PH 7.6
PH High 7.4
Temp 26

Ornament wise there isn't anything that would cause them problems
The Cherry Barbs did use to chase each other round but haven't since the Fin rot started.

Cleaning the gravel - I don't move the ornaments to which there are 3 2 of which the fish can get under - should i take them out to clean?

I have found a better technique - i changed the end attachment and this has made it easier for me so should improve

I don't use a carbon filter so thats not a Problem

My stock is:-
8 Cherry Barbs
4 Otos
1 Female DG

only the cherry barbs seem affected all the others are lively and eating normally

The CB's are just hiding all the time now, not really interested in anything. They do eat but not as much as they did.
