Hi

I have a tetratest but I'm not sure what the different things are on it can you help?
What is, NO3, NO2, GH, KH, pH. Think I realise the last one though.
I know this makes me sound stupid coz I have had this tank for one year now with not many problems, but I want to confirm because I have a problem with one of my platies that I need help with.

Hi there NO3 is NitrAte, NO2 is NitrIte, GH is General hardness, KH is carbonate hardness and is the buffering ability which determines your PH and tells you how hard your water is or soft as the case may be in an established tank the main ones to test for weekly are NitrAte and PH, in a new set up then Ammonia and NItrite are more important hope that clears up your query

Thank you
right I've got some info for you then, again I'm probably sounding like a right novice but here goes, my tank is 58ltrs and it has the setup that came with it which is a rena heater, rena five filter, it also has an air pump. We last changed about 25-30% of the water on Wed. I recently got 2 loachs, one being a clown loach, and 3 sunburst cres platies, already in the tank was 3 zebra's, 3 neon tetras, and 2 catfish. One of the platies has lost weight and is swimming at the top of the tank, it looks like it's trying to eat but spits it back out. Please help.
oh the readings are NO3 50,NO2 0,GH >6d, KH 3d, and pH 6.4. The only thing we have found close to the symptoms is TB, could there be another explanation? the thought of having to take out the fish and kill it is quite upsetting to me.

I've just read the link you sent and I have printed it off I feel like I've just opened my eyes for the first time, when I've read up on keeping tanks I think they left me confused and I tried to do the best I could, I've not done bad but I think that may have been more luck then judgement.

Well your readings are fine PH is slightly on the low side which may mean either that your tap water is soft like ours or it has dropped over time as it can in a mature tank I would test your tap water to see if it is soft or not
