Hi,

I'm looking for ideas/advice on connecting two ponds.

I currently have an half-raised 1000 litre pond. Its a brick built square with a liner (not sure exactly what type, but it seems more like rubber than PVC). This pond is now too small for the number of fish we have, so I'm going to build a new pond adjacent to it.

I'm planning to use an Atlantis Fibreglass "Venice" liner, half-raised again, and positioned alongside the brick built pond.

I'm thinking of cutting a channel into the existing brick wall and matching that with a channel cut into the side of the Atlantis liner, but I'm struggling for ideas on how best to seal the channel;

Would I be able to get an effective seal using a rubber liner insert glued to the fibreglass on one side and the existing liner in the brick pond? Or would it be better to use fibreglass matting to create a watertight channel joining the two ponds?

I've attached a graphic which gives a rough idea of my planning - the new pond is shown on the left-hand side.

Any ideas/advice would be very gratefully received.

I need some clarification here.

Your "picture" shows:

1) 3 pools but you seem to currently have only one pool.

2) The pools are different levels, but you said you want to add your new pool along side the current pool.

So my question is can you please clarify what you have and what you want to do. (I don't want to appear to be pedantic over it, its just you know what you want / mean, I am not sure)

Hi-some clarification;

The lower pool on the right hand side is the existing pond (a brick built tank with a rubber liner), above and behind it is a "header" tank which returns water to the pond.

On the left is the new pond (the fibreglass model which you attached)that I want to add and connect to the existing pond (The water level will be the same as the existing pond - afrsid I didn't get the graphic precisely right to show this).

Getting the new pond sited and built in etc. should be fairly straightforward - but I'm looking for ideas on the best way to connect the two and ensure I've got a watertight connection.

Ah, I "see" and understand.

I also see several "problems"
If you "make a hole" in any container (pool in this case) the water level will be lowered to this new level*

Fish will probably not want to swim across as not only will they be in shallow water, they will also be vulnerable from above.

HOWEVER if you have a channel that is deep it solves these problems. Since if its deep it must have high sides (to the top of both pools) it will also be safer for fish to cross, even better would be if it was covered.

A simple way to do this would be to use a large diameter pipe, you can then use a "tank connector" at either end with an amount of silicone.

BUT, this in-turn leads to another bunch of problems.
1) Have you a big holesaw?
2) How will you hide the cables that have to come over the edge of your new fibreglass pool
3) Expense of big pipework
4) Must be leak proof first time

The new pool costs around £300, you still have to build a wall for it to sit in, (since it will be on the same level as the existing pool)
Why not build the new wall, and buy a flexible liner that is big enough to cover both?
No joins to worry about, so it will not leak and the fish will be safer
You can get a 8 x8 m flexible liner, (oh and underlay) 35 year g'tee for just under £200
