Hiya all,

We have a largish indoor pond in our glass house at Askham Bryan College in York. No Ideas of how many litres. There are about 20 fish in there, I think ranging from coy carp to fancies. (Not big on identification).

The largest of which is a male coy carp of uncertain age. He may be 40+ I know they can live very long. He has had on his body for a very long time, as well as the others growths which may or may not be cancerous.

Today the horticulture staff found him lying on his side at the bottom of the pond. Thinking he was dead they went to get him out but he woke up and started moving. He is not interested in eating anything and has lost his curiosity when people come to see him. His eyes looked to be a bulging a bit.

They have had people out to look at his lumps but unfortunately nothing can be done.

They did a big pond clear out last week, putting a new air bubblier in to deal with the algae problem.

I did the water test with API liquid test kit.

Water readings as of last Friday.

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10

Any ideas what can be done to make him perk up again. Is there something that can be put in the water.

Thank you in advance.

Debz.

Erk, I'm not a Koi expert but 2010 may be able to assist here for you I hope. I'll pm him after posting.

The water quality looks tip top, nothing to add there at all. His lumps and growth may be just plain old Lymphocystis (which is a virus) or a tumour (not necessarily cancer, could be benign) but removing such lumps is difficult. My concern with the post is that you mention he is off food That's a bad symptom (just as it would be with any fancy in a tank) assuming the pond water is warmer right now given time of year if they are under cover in the glass house as suggested. Sorry I can't assist more. Fins crossed for him though.

That's like giving everyone in a room a cigarette to smoke, even if they don't smoke, and if there was some thing you could put in the water how much would you put in? since you did say

We can't see the fish, so can’t help it, but some one already has seen it and commented.

Don’t waste your time.

Does the pond have any filtration? I suspect either it hasn’t, or its not well maintained, or it undersized, or a mixture.

How about some pictures? (pool and filtration)

It has all been sorted thank you. We have treated for swim bladder as advised by someone who keeps Koi carp. The pond has a brand new external filtration system put in last year. They survived, especially the fish in question for a good 20 years in the pond without one.

The person who previously looked at the fish was a trainee vet nurse in the animal management section of the college and not used to dealing with fish.

I bother because I have been at the college for several years and do not like to see things suffer.

Kind regards

Debz

An air stone / bubbler will not cure algae.

Which is why I said Quote:

Not interested in your rudeness thank you.

I am aware how algae builds up, the pond gets regularly cleaned out, however with it being in a heated glasshouse in the horticultural department it builds up.

I have suggested to them to get some clean up crew. Algae eating snails, which I will take from my tank.

Hi Debz

2010 says things as they are!, he is very knowledgeable on ponds and has given me a lot of advice in the past.
He did not mean to be rude, just getting straight to the point (like my hubby does! ).

Hope your fish improves.

Ella

Vet has been to see him. He gave him an injection, we will see how he gets on.
