HI
Tank: Aqua One AR850 165Litre (Approx 150Litre water) Planted tank with Wool, Sponge & Ceramic over the top of the tank filter (i removed the carbon when started the medication) I also have a Phosphate remover up there as i was having a problem with string algae. Set-up: August 08. Inhabitants: 6 Black Neon Tetra, 3 Otto's, 2 Congo Tetra, 1 Flying Fox, 2 Red Torpedo Barb (Puntius denisonii, 4 Black/Marbled Molly (2 Young) 2 Sailfin Green Molly, 6 Platy (2 young), 2 Honey Gourami and 2 Mountain Shrimp & Lots of trumpet snails Last water change: Sunday -30% Last water test: 10 minutes ago: Amonia = <0.25 No3 = 10 No2 = 0 GH = 8 KH = 6 PH = 6.8 Cl2=0 Problem: White-spot. Medication: Protozin. Our male sailfin Molly got whitespot and we dosed the tank and it went away - 2 days later it was back and one of the Marbled Molly's also had it. Following the instructions have since done 3 more doses (3/4 days apart) and whilst the Marbled Molly is better, the sailfin loses it for a day & then its back and now the female sailfin has 3 spots on her. Dont want to keep dosing if its not going to work so looking for help please. Cant attache photo due to camera not working properly at the moment. All help welcome, cheers T |

Forgot to ask - how long is Protozin supposed to take to work completely and will the sailfin act as a carrier of the disease in future?

In normal tropical temperatures (around 25C) it should be effective in one course (dosing days 1,2,3 and 6 if I remember rightly, which means the course is complete on day 9 and you then do a water change and add carbon to remove the medication).
Whitespot can only be killed in the free swimming juvenile stage of the parasite - when an egg or attached to the fish it is immune. Ensure you complete the medication course. Protozin is a good medication but there are resistant whitespot strains around so if you've completed the course and the whitespot has returned add carbon to the filter, do a 25% water changes today and tomorrow and then after the second water change take the carbon back out and start dosing with Esha Exit. |

Quote:
The lifecycle of the parasite is 3-12 days depending on tank temperature and it can only be killed in one part of the lifecycle that lasts only 24 hours or so. Because of this the medication has to be in the water for at least one lifecycle period to ensure that all the whitespot are killed. A single fish will infect the whole tank yes, even if the others don't show visual signs they will be carrying. |
