Re: Where is my good bacteria :-( #21
Yes there is a benefit to having a raised temperature when cycling (fishless of course)

We've all been there, I got through a fish in cycle myself and other than a couple of issues (one going on now) everyone survived it and came out the other side and some of the platy's even had babies.

Just keep on doing what you are doing and it will cycle. It only takes longer because you are always removing the ammonia and nitrite from the water so it slows down the growth of the bacteria needed.

Re: Where is my good bacteria :-( #22
Hi,
So, whilst I have not been posting I have been testing, changing water etc.

Still really confused

Ammonia goes from 0.25 to 0.5 to 1.0.
As I am using prime I have not done water changes every day but have dosed with prime when it got to 0.5 and 1.0.
I thought that by leaving some ammonia (ammonium with prime?) it may prompt a bacterial feast...
...alas no.
I have not registered a reading for nitrite or nitrate since I last went to P@H which is about 3 weeks now.

Any clues?
I have virtually no substrate now, I did a 90% water change yesterday with prime, result after change was 0.25 ammonia, 0 the others.
I didn't feed the fish after the change, as difficult as it was to ignore them.
This morning before feeding them the ammonia has gone up to 0.5.

Where is it all coming from?

In summary:
Monday Amm 0.25 no pwc
Tuesday Amm 0.5 no pwc dosed with prime
Wednesday Amm 1.0 50% pwc with prime
Thursday Amm 0.25 no pwc
Friday Amm 0.5 no pwc dosed with prime
Saturday Amm 1.0 no pwc dosed with prime
Sunday Amm 1.0 90% pwc with prime

The only waste left behind yesterday were the few small bits floating in the remaining water.
The filter was only moved to ensure it remained under the water whilst performing the water change.
The only other thing to note is that the water does go a bit cloudy after a couple of days but I am guessing this could be due to the heat.
I have reduced the amount of food as well, by about half.

It's coming from the fish - they produce ammonia in their waste and from their gills as they breathe. It can also come from any uneaten food that's hidden away in the tank or from any decaying leaves on plants and so on.

Cycling fish in is a very long and tedious process, but you must continue with daily partial water changes and keep ammonia and nitrite at or under 0.25 until it's done. Expect it to take 6-8 weeks.

Nitrites have arrived!

You have no idea how excited I am to see some kind of progress!

Only 0.25 but they are there.

Small pwc today to reduce ammonia and nitrite.

Suspect the nitrate may be a touch darker than 0 but not too sure?

Will kerb my excitement over that until I am sure.

Well who would have thought it?

This morning we say "Hello" to nitrates.

Definately need a pwc today, maybe 50% or so as I have the following:
Ammonia 0.5
Nitrite 0.5
Nitrate 5.0

Sooooo happy!
