Re: Ecospheres - not sure where to put this #11
Me and my fish buddy were looking at getting some of the shrimp that they put inside the ecosphere.. They will live for around 20 years, but ecospheres don't work for that long so the shrimps are nowhere near their expected lifespan at the best estimate of how long the ecosphere will last, so a terribly expensive way to kill a few shrimp really... And I think its more a case of slowly dying rather than surviving for all that time anyway!
We are intending to have a small filtered tanks for them, and provide good conditions and hope they breed!
For anyone interested in the species there is good info here...Opae ula

Quite a bit of interesting stuff going on there :)
I think sticking to plant in the closed ecosystems is a good idea.

An Interesting thought however,
what would happen in a fully aquatic marine one with just phytoplankton in?
I would assume you would get the occasional blooms ect but could be quite a curio to see what happens.

I've read since yesterday that the volcano shrimp are chosen for ecospheres particularly for the fact that they are hardy enough to survive periods of prolonged starvation - really not ethical!!
