After coming home to a leaking tank i've gone out and bought a Boyu MT50 which is an 80 cube. It has a plastic trim around the base and up the sides at the back.

I don't have room for a stand really and want to put it on the kitchen worktop, which will take the weight, but does it need to go on polystyrene mats? I didn't do that with the one that's cracked and I bet that's why it did...bugger.

Also does anyone have any advice with regards a logical way to transfer everthing over? I'm thinking syphon half the water out to a bucket, put fish in, try desperately to catch shrimp, syphon more water out, put filter media (noodles) in a pop sock in said bucket with powerhead to keep water flowing....put popsock over powerhead to try and prevent the whole thing turning into shrimp soup....got a fun night ahead I think....

Qick google suggests tank stand is an 'optional' extra as far as I know with this range, so leads me to believe the tank supports do all the work

An 80 litre will still be v heavy once filled though, my silicone around the kitchen tiles/splash back panel peeled away once a bit when housing a 60 litre on site when the tanks weight rested a bit, so level of work surface dropped a bit lower!

As for an instant cycle like this, yup, process is usually as follows with already 'good' water params:

Quote:

True, whilst all surfaces in the tank are coated with some bacteria the vast majority are housed in the filter. Moving over existing gravel would help a bit, but not vital if you want to change the colour scheme at this stage. The crucial thing is the filter media.

Add new pre rinsed substrate to new tank. Fill up the new tank to about 50-60% with pre treated, warmed water (test for 24 hours first though so you know it doesn't leak) move the existing filter over to run alongside the new one, or simply add all the media to the new filter - cram it in, it doesn't have to look pretty and if it's sponge it should squidge in.

If you plan to run the filters alongside each other, the old one needs to run for about 6-8 weeks to ensure the water stays safe whilst the new media grows the bacteria colony.

Add the filters and switch on, top up the tank with as much of the ‘existing’ tank water as you can - it gets a bit mucky as you get lower so leave the last bit (fish may be happier in a bucket of existing tank water whilst you do this bit) - then add the fish, acclimatising them first in bags as you would if they were new additions.

Then, the final top up of pre treated water may be needed to complete. You can then move existing plants/add new plants, twiddle and fuss with layout as the last stage as you won't be clock watching at this point.

Hey presto, same amount of bacteria but more water volume. When upgrading like this you don't need to wait for the new bigger tank to cycle. Testing each day for a week or so is recommended so you can catch and deal with any possible small spikes that may occur in the water parameters

Depends on the tank, you'll need to check the instructions. My Fluval Roma and Juwel Korall specifically say not to, as the base of the tank is supported by the plastic trim, and the glass doesn't touch the cabinet. The plain AquaOne cube I have does need it, as the glass rests directly on the surface. I had one that broke because the foam probably wasn't thick enough.

Thanks very much for the advice both of you, all seems well now, tank is set up and managed to empty the old one without traumatising the fish too much and without losing any more water.

I shall definitely try and get a pic, it's just for my rescued Betta and shrimp, had to put a few extra almond leaves in and need to get some shrimp safe plants as my old tank was thick with vallis, but it doesn't provide half the cover in this tank!
