I have an small fish bowl (can hold about 20l of water) and I'm thinking about getting a filter then set up a small shrimp tank on my desk.
Then I came up with many problems, one of them is mosquito larvae. Also my room is air conditioned but I do turn off sometimes. So the tank might suffer temp changing from 25C to 30C during a certain time (for about 5-8 hours) everyday. Will it harm the shrimp? |

Other than the temp issues, I would not recommend a 'bowl' for any species, even shrimp, as the surface area is just too small and 20 litres is a bit on the small side even for shrimp. A small 35 litre would be do-able though.
A square/oblong tank will assist with gaseous exchange and the added surface area assists with temp issues (with an airstone/fan etc). Bowls are for soup, lol IMHO ![]() |

It's a bowl with big surface area though, the diameter is 20cm (for both top and bottom). Don't know if it's enough.
I have an empty one and don't know what to do with it, throwing it away is a waste xD |

Plants? Seen some lovely ones with carnivorous plants or cacti.

Sounds like it isn't a bowl, but a cylinder then if the diameter is the same at the top and bottom. I think you must be out by a good deal on the water volume though. A cylinder 20cm in diameter would have to be 65cm tall to hold 20 litres ![]() |

Fl, Nope it's not a cylinder, there's a big curve and it get bigger as it reaches the middle and then get smaller to 20l at the bottom. It's only 50cm tall though
I don't know how to calculate the volume so I fill it up and keep counting the amount of water I use. It's approximately 20, not so sure.Onyxia, I've never seen a carnivous water plant, can you suggest some? |

The surface area is very small then. If it's 20cm diameter then the radius is 10cm.
The area of a circle is Pi x r2 so 3.14 x(10x10) = 314 square cms. The surface area of a 20 litre rectangular tank like this (which I wouldn't recommend for keeping anything in) is 37 x 23 = 851 square cms - almost three times greater. Plants only for the bowl I think. |

There aren't many that are fully aquatic. I was more thinking of using the bowl as a terrarium. Carnivorous plants tend to need special conditions, boggy but low nitrates and ph. I saw some impressive set ups on another forum a while back but never got around to getting the bowl :) |
