I have a black moor goldfish and his eyes got like 3x the usual size and then I think they fell out. The eyes do not go out anymore like a telescope and I think he can still see but only a little this first started around a month and a half ago. If any of you think you know what happend to my fish, Tinky Winky, and or you know how to fix it PLEASE reply! Thank you so much!Help!

Oh dear
That sounds like a bad case of pop eye perhaps.Has he completely lost both eyes? Can you confirm the tank readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH (also GH if you can). Sometimes this can be water quality related as opposed to bacterial so best to rule that out first. What size tank is he in and does he have any other friends in there? Keeping the water pristine with a little bit of pimafix/melafix will assist in the interim. |

Oops! I accidentally posted that twice the things that I ment to say were that the only thing that I could get is the pH which is 7.8. Tinky Winky does have 2 fish with him one is another black moor goldfish and I recently got them. The first time I noticed the thing wrong with his eye was in June he was Neerly dead with his eyes swollen but that was when I just got a new tank and rocks and forgot to clean the rocks so when I did he seemed to get better. But ever scence his eyes swelled up and then I think they fell out of his head. And yes both eyes. The size of the tank is 5 gallons. And sorry i don't know how to upload pictures.Reply

Hi Alun
Given the tank size and the stock then, I fear it highly likely that poor water quality is to blame The 5 US gallon tank is woefully too small for this type of fish. These fish grow fast and large (or should do in the correct volume) and need large tanks and external filtration due to how dirty they are. I would suspect your ammonia, nitrite and nitarte to be extremely high and this leads to health issues as you are experiencing ![]() FK suggest a minimum tank size of 60 US gallons to house 3 fancies - linky here: http://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/articles ... -size-life-expectancy.htm I would therefore suggest an immediate emergency water change of 50%, make sure you pre treat to remove chlorine and chloramine, followed by daily changes until you can find them a suitably sized home. It's unlikely a fish shop would take them off you right now (something I would have suggested) and I would also prepare yourself a little, as these fishies may not make it ![]() I'm sorry if that looks a little bleak but we need to be honest so you can deal with the problem objectively. They sell these in the States too, API Freshwater Master Test Kit, so you can test the tank yourself: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw ... t+kit&_osacat=0&_from=R40 Lot's of us here use plastic storage crates as emergency tanks (more volume whilst you source a glass tank) which would be a good move. Something like this but make sure it's food safe plastic, so no nasties: This one is 145 UK litres (equivalent to 38 US gallons) but would be OK as a temp measure. http://www.staples.co.uk/office-suppl ... boxes/145-litre-clear-box Any questions fire away. |

I did fear that I'm afraid
![]() From posts here I can only summise that many US shops give even worse advice than in the UK All fish need volume and adequate filtration, water changes etc. Think 15 US gallons for just a small shoal of fish (x 6) who grow no more than 5cm when adult. Once you get into bigger fish - fancies should grow to 8 inches min or so - so need far bigger tanks. The remaining fish still needs an upgrade asap if he is to make it. Think 36 US gallon if you can? |
