Hi everyone,
I've recently bought somewhere with a pond. I'd like to know what the fish are - I think the seller mentioned goldfish and koi but I'm not sure! Would you mind having a look at these pics? They are mainly little goldfish but there's a couple of larger white/speckled ones too. Also, this was early this morning, with no food in- what are they all doing crowding on the side of the pond?? I made 2 short videos below: Vid1 and Vid2 thanks! :) |

Hi, welcome to FK
That looks like a nice pond Bit hard to see the fish in detail but goldies come in all sorts of colours so 'd guess you have a mix of colours rather than species. Koi have barbels whereas goldfish don't (little 'whiskers' at the side of their mouths) so should be fairly easy to tell if you have these too.It looks to me like the fish are in the mood for love Some of them look quite fat so could be females carrying eggs and the males are chasing them about and shoving them against the sides of the pond to get them to release the eggs Early morning is a prime time for lovin'!HTH, fire away if you have any more questions, or just like talking about fish ![]() |

Thanks for the advice!
I've got more questions if that's OK! 1. Fish feed I use Nishikoi floating fish sticks, have thrown in a handful a day since March (after nothing for the six winter months, does that sound right?) - should I change the feed to another type for the sake of their diet? Or do they prefer to get the same thing all the time? I wouldn't! 2. Green water You see it's very green - I've tried TAP and Hozelock anti-green water products to no effect, should I try barley straw? Or it a UV light really the only thing that works? 3. Do you think there are too many fish for the pond? Any advice is welcome, thanks! :) p.s. I thought I'd uploaded two pictures, can anyone see them?? |

My goldies are tank ones so I do tend to feed them a variety of food, but in a pond there's an element of 'wildlife' for them to snack on like bugs and larvae etc. If the pond has plants they'll also snack on those, and the micro organisms on the algae, and any pond snails etc. You could have a couple of different types of pellets perhaps and ring the changes. Goldies do eat quite a bit volume-wise but ponds give them a bit more than tanks when it comes to snacks so as long as they're eating everything you give them in a few minutes that should be about right
![]() AFAIK most pond keepers stop feeding when temps drop, there's a good article on PFK about ponds in winter (we have a few pond stickies in the pond section of the forum but nothing on winter info as yet) http://forum.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/showthread.php?t=70065 I'll move your thread to the pond section where you'll hopefully get a bit more info on the algae problem. Algae tends to be an imbalance in the nutrients/light etc. in the pond. It's not necessarily bad for the fish but it does make it tricky to see them! We've got an article on algae in tanks so maybe have a read of that and see if anything can be applied to ponds too ![]() http://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/articles ... -types-and-treatments.htm How many fish, roughly are in there? What sort of volume of water is the pond? If you're not sure post the approx measurements and we'll figure it out ![]() |

Good quality costs. Bear this in mind before you start.

A "thank you" costs nothing, but goes a long way.
