Currently cycling tank and bought plants for it. Man in shop said just remove pot and plant which I did. Ive now just read that I should have removed the foam (seems obvious now but I assumed it was some sort of growing medium or something). The thing is that some of them looked pretty ropey for a while but are now sprouting from the base so not sure about disturbing them.. Ive got to do a big water change before I put fish in so do I uproot them and replant or leave them be? Thanks! ![]() |

Hi, the foam stuff is mineral wool and as I understand it the plant nurseries simply use it as a growing medium. I'd gently uproot them and tease the plants from the wool. You might find that there are more than one plant in each pot so you can spread them a bit further.
If you can keep the roots intact as you remove them from the wool, all the better. However don't worry to much if you lose a little bit as they should re- establish and trim off any roots that have gone brown. Depending on what substrate you have it maybe best done before your water change. That way your water change will help with any water clouded by the substrate. |

Ive got gravel.
The only reason I was going to do it at water change is that my tank is hexagonal so it distorts your vision so its surprisingly difficult to plant exactly where you want it. Its a bit like trying to do something whilst watching in a mirror!. Also its quite deep so was trying to avoid water up to my armpit That is a very good point though about it clouding the water. One plant is looking very sad with lots of brown leaves. (dont know what it is but tall with narrow leaves. OH threw the label away).Would you take it out completely or trim it off lower down?. Maybe its too sensitive for a cycling tank? Thanks for your advice. |

If they aren't doing so well I would leave them where they are for a few months. Thats just my opinion though.
Unfortunately aquarium plants are usually not grown in water so the leaves they have aren't suited to being submerged. Once they are planted in the aquarium they shed those leaves and grow new ones that are adapted to your tank conditions. pull off any dead/dying leaves and it should grow back. |

Thanks Onyxia. That good advice as the ones that have been in the tank longest are sprouting. Its one of the newer ones that is very sad looking so I will remove the foam, trim the dead leaves and leave it be for a while.
P.s have you posted on HHO?.I recognise your user name! Thanks for the help ![]() |
