Hey Fellow fish lovers
I regrettably will have to return one of my chinese algae eaters as he is getting very aggressive towards other fish. I have another one (smaller) and he doesn't bother any other fish. They do a fantastic job of controlling the algae, which leads me to my question, what other algae eater or snail? could take over the role? Advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Mr T. |

You could try nerite snails. Come in several varying types suitable for a freshwater tank and won't touch plants. Only drawback is they won't breed in a freshwater setup.

Bristlenose Plecs are pretty good algae eaters, but be aware that if you get a pair and they breed you'll be over-run in no time.
The smaller CAE is likly to behave the same way as the other once it grows a bit unfortunately. They typically start off peacefully, but as they grow larger they become quite aggressive and usually need returning from whence they came ![]() |
