Hi,

I've noticed this algae starting to grow in my tank. Its on a few of the leaves of the Amazon Swords, all over the filter box, and growing on the bogwood.

I think its looks quite cool and natural, but, is it harmful? and will it take over the tank?

Water parameters:

pH - 7
NO2- - 0ppm
NO3- - 2ppm
NH4+ - 0ppm

Temp - 25oC

Any ideas peeps?

Does your tank get a lot of direct sunlight?

I have never had an issue with algae, then a few weeks ago I spotted a big green patch of it on the glass. I worked out that at around noon the sun was in just the right position to shine through a gap in my background. The place it struck on the front glass had the algae!

I believe algae loves the red light in natural daylight - an aquarium lamp tends not to have this. So, if possible, move your tank out of direct sunlight.

If your tank isn't in direct sunlight. Well. Erm. Ignore me! :P

Haha. No, no direct sunlight at all.

Are there any fish out there that particularly love to eat hair algae?

You shouldnt really get a fish just to clean up algae, but there is a few species which will help. You are better off looking at the guides and trying to find the cause and take it from there
