Yes, getting your head round the cycle can be a bit of a steep learning curve - don't worry.
Once the filter has grown all the different types of bacteria it needs to deal with fish, it gets easier. Ammonia and nitrite in a cycled tank should always read nil. Fish produce ammonia through poop etc and this is converted to nitrite by the bacteria. Hence with the right amount of bacteria you shouldn't see either of these register on kits at all as they get consumed quickly. If they do register - it's time to get friendly with Mr Bucket again, to dilute them! Small spikes can occur due to power cuts/overfeeding etc sometimes. Nitrite is then converted to nitrate, the end stage of the process. Nothing removes nitrate except water changes or nitrate removal media. I'm fortunate, where I live, tap water nitrate is about 0-5ppm so when readings creep up each week, a water change resolves the issue. Ideally keepers try to keep it below 40ppm and ideally under 20ppm. Those who have higher levels of nitrate in tap water often resort to Reverse Osmosis water (RO) or nitrate filters under the sink (Pozzani) that strip this out. |

Ive cracked it. Over the last three weeks the water changes have been getting less frequent from every 2 days to 4 days before any noticable readings, and its now been a week and the water is just about ready for a normal water change. Many thanks to those who have helped me along this rocky road and steep learning curve. May the force be with you
