i have recently bought the 1400 with uv filter from all pond solutions, ive had it for about a month but cant bring myself to set it up as the fittings seem so cheap! im worried it will all come apart!
my current external is fluval 305, i guess i should transfer all media into new filter for a period of time to allow bacteria to form on new bio balls and sponges anyone got any advice as to where to put new media in the baskets and how to accomodate old media in new canister also would it be best to have spraybar above pr below water line as i suspect this will be quite powerful thanks |

Hi, I have the same filter and agree that the plastics feel cheap, but don't worry they work ok. There will be lots of room in the new filter for old media too. I have bio balls on the bottom, then noodles and sponge on top. Seems to work ok.

Hi!
I agree with Jon - while the plastic may not look or feel as sturdy as your Fluval, it is not about to fall apart either! I have the APS 2000EF with UV and have had it running since June last year with no hassles. Jon has had his even longer than that. I am very lucky that the 2000 has 4 media baskets so I am spoilt for choice when it comes to media! I have Fluval pre-filter media in the bottom one, then sponges (the filter came with one thin sponge in each tray, I put them all in this tray with the sponges from my old filter too), then ceramic noodles (the ones that came with the filter plus the ones from my old filter) then finally filter floss at the top - this is mostly for polishing and gets changed fairly regularly but have only changed 2 out of the 6 sponges in the last 10 months as they were my very oldest ones and were coming apart! My spraybar is below the water line as I have filled my tank right to the top so it isn't possible for the spraybar to sit above the surface, but I have the holes angled up and forward towards the surface to disturb it and increase gas exchange. If you find the current is too powerful try angling the holes back towards the glass to reduce the force of the flow. More pics of my filter setup in my blog HTH ![]() |

My 1000lph has just finished cycling. Was a bit dubious about the cheap feel too - but i bought knowing what it would be like, and to be fair nothing has broken yet.. and i'm not very patient!
