Hi people,

My new tank came with a hideous background attached to the back of it which I've now removed. I did want to paint the back of it black but the tank is now up and running and access is limited. I've seen the rolls of black backing on ebay etc but how good do they look once they're fitted?

I guess ideally you need no air bubbles or gap between the backing and the glass to stop any moisture building up. Has anyone ever used something like Seaview to attach it? Is it a glue as such or is it an oiley type substance?

Thanks

I had something like that, it was rather like vaseline! I just use sellotape now tbh on the one tank I've got that I haven't painted or fitted a 3D background on.

Cool, I guess sellotape is cheaper anyway! Can you get the sheet flat enough so that it looks good from the front of the tank?

All of my backgrounds are attached using tape I use the black electrical tape though, doesn't go brittle like sellotape can over time. Just tape it along the edges and job's a good 'un, you don't need any oil or stuff like that, just do it dry and keep it flat as possible, doesn't need to be slap bang up against the glass Looks fine, dunno what all the fuss about bubbles between background and glass is tbh, have never managed to nause it up myself and you can be sure if it could be naused up I'd probably manage it

Sorry to hijack the thread - where's the best place to get backgrounds from? P@h are a rip off! eBay is probably the best bet I'm guessing?

Ebay does seem like a cheap place to get it from. Luckily I have a few good LFS near to where I live, which will give me something to do on a sunday :)

I second the black tape method, I also ran it down the edges of my tank and across the bottom, looked cool cos it matched the black hood,

I use plain dark blue or dark green wrapping paper cut to fit and blu tacked to the tank frame at the back. Is really simple and neat (can't see the blu tack at all) and is easy to remove if you need to.
And it's cheap!

£4 spent today on some black backing, covered the background and the side of the tank in the corner of the room, looks miles better although with the tank empty of anything other than gravel and water, it shows up any marks on the glass!

Really pleased with how that turned out, at least the cables are no longer visible. Started getting some nitrite build up now which is good, slowly getting to the point where I can put fish in. Got some plants on the way and then i need to decide on some fish to go in there, and finish off the lighting solution.... the list is never ending!
