Oh god I have just been having a night mare with this myself! I normally only clean it once a month but in the last few months my goldfish tank has been pooier than ever! I swear I'm never keeping commons in a tank ever again after these go in the pond.
If I am correct, the ammount of good bacteria in/ under the gravel is NOTHING compared to the ammount in the filter media, so I dont think there is any such thing as over cleaning it but on the other hand a bit of dirt doesnt do them any harm as long as the nitrogen cycle is established to deal with the harmful ammonia that is released by decaying matter that might be stuck in the gravel. But with my new toy (penn plax bsuper battery vac) I think I will be cleaning more often dum de dum deeee! |
