as cathy said, the dead coral that makes up live rock has a large external surface area, but the bugs that live in it of the years dig into the rock making it porous which makes a larger surface area but also anaerobic spots that in marines harbour enough bacteria to remove the nitrate from the water
lava rock is a porous rock that can become an efficient bio filter in freshwater, but it is harder to clean than the filter |

Thanks for all your replies I'm going to start the job of soaking it tonight, it hasn't been in water for about 4 months now does that make any difference? How long should I soak it and how about boiling? Cheers again you folk on here are lifesavers, well fish savers :)

Ocean rock is now in soaking and is quite clean. I hosed it all down as had been in my shed for a few months now. With the boiling method do you just put the rocks into a bucket and pour boiling water over them?

Yes it is. Repeat it many times to make sure it's safe to use!

So just pour it over and then tip the water away or leave it to soak in there?

Don't tip it away right away. Pour the boiled water in and soak the rock in boiled water until the water is cool down. Then dump all the water and do it again with new boiled water.
