Imop The way pythons work are a waste of water, but i do understand some people do need them Ie not everyone can lift and pour buckets of water, but could always use a small water pump in a bucket or container to refill the tank..

I really don't understand how they work I suspect I'm being a bit slow onthe uptake here though! How do you dechlorinate? It just sounds like a hose to me

I gather that people who use these put dechlorinator directly into the aquarium as they refill it. The other issue is matching temperature. From what I can see it should be used with a mixer tap, mixing to approx tank temp. Couldn't do that here though (even if we had a mixer tap) as I understand you shouldn't use water from a hot water storage tank for aquariums. Our cold supply comes out of the tap very cold - about 10C at the moment. I always have to warm some in the kettle to get the right temp.

(reminds me of the cashier at shop by work when I was getting sandwich - old lady complaining about price of milk - 'but that's not just any milk, that's M & S milk' - old lady looked puzzled but rest of the queue fell about)

NO idea how to make your own! Am vaguely thinking about one when we get our new boiler as we will be going over from water tank to direct plumbing and combi.

here is an idea..
when you get your combi bolier you could get a hose which will reach from your tank to the tap but will also reach outside,

connect your Aquarium hoover to one end,(there is an attatchment you can manafacture sp, i will get back to you on this once i refind all the pieces) hoover out the water as req let it run into the garden/ drain, then once you have drained out the water req, attatch the hose to the tap and refill the tank,then add your conditoner,

personaly i dont like doing it that way, i pref to add the water in a container,

as for the temp,now this took alot of trials
The tap in the kitchen i have marked 28 degrees so i get the same temp out of the tap,
the shower has this marked already..
i have also stuck a temp gauge onto the side of my water container to ensure i get the right temp before it goes in the tank..

I need to eliminate the carrying of buckets of water. I had thought of the hose outside to the garden to take the waste from the tank. Then the same hose reconnected via an attachment to the mixer tap. (yes we have a new combi boiler!).

I have read you can make your own python though. Using a tap connector, a Y piece, standard hose connectors, a stop connector and the hose. I just need to find the instructions again! The force of the water in the hose gets the suction going somehow. I cant explain how exactly, but as I understand it, you get some water into the hose, shut off the tap and then open the outlet on the Y piece, and as the water rushes out of the hose and down the sink it lifts the water out of the tank on the other end.

The third option is to use an aquaroll (camping thing that you push filled with water) but that might still give me backache.

I can't use a Python as we have a hot water storage tank and on top of that, I've just switched to RO for a variety of reasons so I've just bought an Aquaroll for transporting water to the tank, with a water-butt pump to get the water into the tank from the Aquaroll.....hoping it'll be easier than buckets as I have back problems too!

How are you getting on with aquaroll?
