I never knew these were even available as 'pets' until recently,when looking at Tarantulas online. Does anyone have any experience with them? I would have imagined they would require a marine environment but it seems you just need a damp substrate (coir + wet sand) and one or two shells to move into. I must admit they do seem a cool addition to the pet trade- I just hope they're all captive bred!

There are 2 sorts. Marine hermit crabs, which is what i think you must have Rach, which live underwater and land hermit crabs which are the ones that just need damp sand and a spray with mist. Coralline keeps land hermits. I was going to get some a few years ago, they seem really sweet. She had lots of good advice, so Coralline is your girl.

yep they are cool critters, and no they arent captive bred - none of them. only captured from their wild habitats. i bought my first couple before i fully realised what a rough deal the little guys get. the rest i bought in rescue from local pets at home store whislt giving p@h tons of greif for not looking after them properly or providing the right info or equipment to customers. they stopped selling them shortly after! they need a pretty big home, they need a deep sand/coir/moss layer at the bottom with hidey holes, and plenty of branches to climb and ledges to sit on. mine live in a custom built glass vivarium approx 4x3x2ft. :o)
