Hello
If it's 48liters, sorry to tell you, no way you can have clowns as females are more than 10 cm for the smaller species. They may not reach this size, but to host clowns successfully on the long term you will need a 100 liter. It is the same with blue damsels! Too small a tank with a heavy fish population will lead you to high pollution rates and thus a heavy maintenance! With 48 liters, you can have small fish perfectly suiting nanos with or without shrimps and a low maintenance on the long run! As regards corals, there is no limitation except light. |

hiya, welcome to fk,
i would also advise agianst clowns and damsels in a 48 litre tank. a pistol shrimp and dwarf goby species combo would be much more suitable, to suggest latin names are difficult for these guys, as its better to see what is available when you go shopping, but for the goby something along the lines of a small stonigobiops species (of which there are several) red and white pistol shrimps (alpheus randalli) are good if there is one available, but others would also be suitable. plenty of corals to choose from, mushrooms (corallimorphs) are good for lower light levels, you could try zoanthid species if you have higher light levels. |

Thanks for your replys,
The tank is set up but I have found out that the salt ro water I got didnt have enought salt in grrrrr, You would think the lfs could get it right. Getting it sorted now tho, and being given good advise from a nice lfs the mainly deals in marine. I am aware that I will only get 3 or 4 fish and a few shrimps or something. This is just a starter tank, If I get one with it, the long term plan is to convert One of my other 180 liter tanks to marine and then use this 48 liter tank for a species only tank (seahorse) |

it is then all the more important you should get the right habits and necessary knowledges from a small and sound nano in order to pass in the future to a bigger tank.
Now, what I often say in my French forum is that there is definitely a nano attitude, or at least a nano "look" at the small animals, which you will not make out if you start right with a big tank. And I hardly know any member who has lost this ability to distinguish and observe the " minute". euh which salt did you get? usuaally for Indo pacific ecosystems it is advisable to put 35.5 gr per liter of osmosis water... |

Ah that's a lot bigger than 48 litres. 24 U.S. gallons is around the 90 litre mark. You should be able to keep a pair of clowns in there I would think.

this is the bottom limit but that should do.
Then choose among the smaller species of clowns. It is said that clwns can go to a coral, they do. But, the relation with an anemone is nevertheless far better for them : behaviour and health as they produce more mucus which protects them again parasites and other troubles. So may be one of the least problematic (size, danger, possibility of wander) is the Bubble anemone. But you will have to protect or put the pumps well away from the anemone who will need a crevice to put its foot and good water movement and light to stay and thrive. Red or brow ones seem to look more 'natural" to clowns, eventhough Entacmaea quadricolor doesn't host such clowns as A. ocellaris/percula or the skunk clowns. |
