Hello
I am new to goldfish and was advised at pets at home to get a 14litre tank for the fantail i got, however 2 weeks on I have done some reading and now realise I need a bigger tank and wanto to get it soon, before the poor little fish gets any bigger. Can anyone advise me what I should get, i just have one fish and am new to fishkeeping. It has to be something that I can put on my sideboard in my lounge, as I dont have room for a stand. Thanks |

Hi Supersausage, welcome to FK
![]() For one fancy goldfish I would recommend a minimum tank size of about 140 litres which is quite large about 3-4ft long. Not sure if it would fit on your sideboard, there is the weight issue as well. Who sold you the 14 litre tank? Could you go back, kick up a stink and swap the goldfish for some white cloud mountain minnows? They can live in a smaller tank (around 60 litres) so that should fit on your sideboard. Or you could get a bigger tank with a heater and keep some tropical fish... |

Alternatively you could look for some ClearSeal tanks. They are usually very cheap and you can get some large sizes.

get one of those tanks that has the filter and light built in. BETTA do a small 40 and a medium 64L. the 64L would be good for a couple of years. they are taller over wider so only good for one fish but it will fit in a smaller area and everything is attached in the hood so it looks nice and neat. the 64L cost about £50. - £60.
they do bigger ones but i wouldn't put her in a massive tank right away. (that's just my opinion. many would disagree) x |

Hi goldfishgirl
![]() Just curious why you wouldn't put a goldfish in a big tank right away, what are your experiences with that? It's hard to tell when stunting occurs so IMO it's best to start with a tank that's the right size from the beginning. Those tanks with the built in filters are OK for small fish but it wouldn't cope with the bioload from goldfish, especially a tank that small. |
