Hi all, I am constatntly fed up with the rising heat coming from my 450, so I have come up with an idea to cool things down somewhat!
Once I have done it, I'll put the description & details to see if it works!! I will be using No4, 14db, 40mm PC case fans, gluing two of them together & placing them in the slot that sits on the left hand & right hand side of the lid. Where you can see the grilles, that's where I'll be placing them! I will be using an ac/dc multi-voltage, 12v regulated power supply to power them. If the fans are too noisy, then I can turn the power down to, say, 9v so they spin slower! Wadda ya think? Do you think it'll work?? All the best to all.............. |

Let me know how it goes. Since replacing the pumps with the maxijet 600 & 900 the temp of my tank has risen significantly. Enough so that I have unplugged the heater & it now runs at 27 during the day & drops to 26 by morning. I don't live in a particularly hot house! Think it briefly rose to over 29 C soon after I changed the pumps and that it has killed my pulsing xenia off - at least I hope that is what killled it off and that I don't have another problem. what is happening with your temps?

Hi, temps fluctuate between 25-29 degrees. The heater has been off ever since I bought the tank! Sends the temps sky high!
Always do a 10% water change every week & that drops temp too! All inhabitants don't seem to mind. Actually discovered my Pistol Shrimp the other day! Thought that he'd died as hadn't seen him for weeks!! Will keep you posted on the fans though. All the best........ |

i am assuming the fans are replacing the ones already there at the back? Or do you mean glue them under the side air vents? When you say gluing together you don't mean on on top of the other as I would not imagine that would increase airflow unless fans were in sync. I do change 5-6 litres a week too but never get too much of a fluctuation. Temp is just higher than I want.

Rich, if you look on the left & right hand side near the middle of the hood, you can see slits in the hood. If you lift the hood up, you can see a 'gully', this gully is exactly 40mm wide.
I am planning on getting 4 Cooling fans, gluing 2 together using Glue The angle that the fans will be stuck will blow quite nicely across the water surface. I will power the fans using AC/DC power regulator Keeping this set to 12v supply, if it gets too noisy, you can turn it down to 9v. That's the plan anyhow! All the very best............ |

Riggers I see what you mean. Will you not need to have one of the vents extracting otherwise where will the warmer air go? It'll probably increase evapouration. Let me now how it goes. I'm just monitoring mine - it seems pretty solid between 26 - 27 and I see on another forum:
http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/showthread.php?t=240428&page=5 that other people have the same issue but is okay. I'm more annoyed that my pulsing Xenia has had it. all the best. |

Rich, just to keep you (and the other posters of course!) in the picture; I have just done a 6ltr water change & have put the WG308 skimmer on a timer (on at 22.00 & off at 07.30) & the 600lph pump on from 07.00 till 19.00. The 600 pump is just used for water movement & NOT attached to the spray bar, that runs 24/7 of course & is a 900lph pump!
Cooling mod details will follow soon as soon as I get my butt over to Ramsgate Maplins!! All the best........... |

Will be interested in the temperatures on this regime as it seems set up same as mine. I have a hydor K nano for circulations - think I can see one in your pic.
Have put some of my tank - first pic is month ago when yellow polyps & pulsing x was fine and last pic is today - pulsing x dead and polyps decreasing. Hoping it was to do with temp rise. Am trying to wait to put coral in to ensure temp is fine. Have read that yellow polyps can be v easy to keep to impossible! Your tank looks great - do you put any additives such as iodine in? Am wondering is the charcoal filter & nitrate/phosphate absorber are stripping it out. Have also found my emerald crab manhandling the polyps to steal the food out of their mouths & even tearing odd one off the rock. |
