Hi ya
i posted in a little while back asking about keeping a goldfish in a 3 gallon

well i followed ur advice and found a second hand 10 gallon tank and got 2 small goldfish (not from the same store though)
a week after

they hav a filter and airator
and gravel and 2 plastic plants and a bridge and some rocks in there tank

so now a month on i hav found that one of them has a lump on its side;
it dosn't look much side on, but u can see it is quite large and sticky out-y from the top.
he has a few lost scales, but i didn't think they were to bad, and couldn't find what was causing them
as the plastic plants hav quite rounded edges and are realitively soft and the rocks are rounded
there seems to be no scales on the lump
so i wondered if when he lost a scale it got infected???

it is a paler colour than his scales and sticks out about
4mm

i have put in some interpet diease safe medication to try and treat it, but looking at the leaflet from the medication it has a list of things it treats and 'lumps' isn't on the list
but i thought it might be what it describes as a 'cotton wool like grow' because it is hard to tell what it is!

i looked on some other fishkeeping websites, and it suggests he might hav swallowed gravel
but i don't think my gravel could fit in his mouth

i will try and get a pic as soon as poss!
plzzzzz help!!!

Hello mel You say you added your fish a week after setting up your tank is that correct as previously explained in your other thread, a tank has to go through a cycle, so I take it your fish have gone through this already as your tank is now a month on do you have any water readings handy as this will tell us loads also a photo if possible so we can see what this lump looks like and then we can go from there

Do you use dechlorinator/dechloraminator when you do water changes?

You need a test kit that reads ammonia, nitrIte, nitrAte and pH.

Lots of people use this one, and this is a good price from reputable ebay seller:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/API-FRESHWATER- ... 1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Post results when you've got them.

Alternatively you can take sample to lfs and ask them to test it, but if so ask them to write down the exact result for each test in ppm, not just 'fine' or 'bit high' etc.

Also as Goldy says, a photo would be really helpful.

i do use declhorinator and biological supplment when i do water changes
i will try and get hold of a test kit as soon as possible

i was have been tring to get a good pic of the goldfish, but he moves to fast and it keeps coming out really blurred
and u can't see the lump in any of my pics

i will keep trying, but in the mean time i will just hav to tell u what it looks like;

it is slightly pointed, and a paler colour than his scales
i think it is where one of his fins has come of
it looks quite solid, and not cotton wool like
it is about 3 to 4mm sticky out, and covers an area around 3mm by 4mm.
he isn't itching it or anything

also, about 1/2 of his body towards the tail is kind of a long s shape. and his back looks a bit bent. i can't rember when i looked like this, but its nothing new. just wondering if it would effect him

what should i do to him at the moment, before i can get my water tested?????

got the pictures of him

it is hardly visible from the side on veiw, but u can just about see it from the top. the front of my tank is quite curved so it reflecs alot, i think thats why they hav come out so bad.

i really don't want him to die :0
plzzz help

i looked on some websites which suggest it might be an absesses, and to use aquarium salts
is this the right treatment???????

do u think it could be contagous????? should i seperate them just incase the other fish gets it???? (i have 2)

i will get the water tested as soon as possible
i think i might get it done at a pet store

how much do you think it would cost per test at a pet store?

thanks for the support

lucy

You say his fin came off, this is not a good thing to happen

Goldfish shouldn't be bent, was he like this when you bought him he doesn't sound very good so a photo would really be helpful

Your LFS should generally do a water test for free, but would recommend if you can getting your own kit, aquarium salt may help him feel better in the short term, but until we know what your readings are and can see the lump then advising on a treatment as a hit and miss is not recommended

Fish are not the easiest to get a good photo of as they tend not to keep still long enough it is a bit hard to see by your photos, but lumps on goldfish can be ulcers, tumours, cysts or sometimes down to a parasite if it is an ulcer due to his scale loss, then you can get a bacterial treatment like Melafix "see link below" and see if this helps any
