I bought an aquarium and filter for my room.

The filter makes too much noise for me to sleep.

Can i turn it off for 8 hours at night so i can het some sleep ?

Also can someone recommend a silent filter ?

You will need to keep it running all the time.

If you turn it off overnight any bacteria in the filter will die and your filter will do nothing other than add a current to the water.

Out of interest what filter are you using?

I have my Juwel Rekord Tank in my bedroom and I cannot hear it but that came with the tank.

Before that I had a Fluval 1 filter which didn't make much noise as long as had the outlet far enough below the water level.

To be honest I don't think you'll get a completely silent filter.

is it an air powered filter? that uses an air pump? or does it have an electric motor? if its an air pump filter, i can see why you would want to switch it off! electric ones are much quiter, if its an electric one thats noisy, check that enough water is covering it as suggested, and look into getting a different filter if its still noisy. but you must have a filter running at all times to keep the fish alive, its the bacteria in the filter that keeps the water safe for fish, and that bacteria needs a good supply of oxygenated water.

do you have any fish yet?

My sisters fluval 1 and my internal filter in one of my tanks becomes noisy when it needs cleaning or may be clogging it may be that if it has a motor the impeller may be getting clogged up with waste thus making a vibrating noise.

To make it quiet , dont use the venturi. Instead place the output just below the surface so that it makes it move a little. That will be enough to aid oxygen into the water and the sucking of the venturi makes most of the noise.
