Hello, I recently spotted a small (2cm long) thin, cylindrical fish, pretty drab in colour, but with a bright blue eye in the shop listed as "lamp eye" - I've looked it up on google but it comes up with a completely different fish. Anyone have any ideas?

ta,
james

Could be a Pseudomugil species of rainboefish (known as blue eyes). Check the following link and select the Pseudomugil species down the right hand side for pictures

Rainbowfish don't colour up until around 6 months and females are always drabber than the males. It could be that you either have a young fish or female if it is a rainbow.

Hi, thanks for the link - some lovely looking fish there, although I'm not sure I remember the ones I saw looking like any of them. I'll try to get a pic of it if I get down to the lfs this weekend.

Thanks for your interest :)

Hi folks, just for info - I found out that the lampeye in one of my local shops is... Aplocheilichthys normani. Here's a link to a pic of some: http://www.fishbase.org/images/thumbnails/jpg/tn_Apnor_u8.jpg

It is indeed a great fish. Silver in colour but with the brightest blue eyes. The fish is small, no more than 3cm but I have had my 3 for over 18 months living quite happily with some Angels , Swords and Cardinal Tetras.
The eye is a deep black and looks like blue eye shadow has been painted above it. A really pretty fish !

My (very old) copy of the Observers book of Tropical fishes says.............
Lamp Eye - Poropanchax macrophthalmus
Other names - Aplocheilichthys or Micropanchax macrophthalmus or Lantern Eye.

It apparently originates from Lagos.
Eggs are not scattered but laid singly or in groups, dangling from the female ventral fin until brushed against plants. Fry are difficult to raise.
