As we all know it has been and is getting pretty hot again.

What is the highest temp you should let your tank get to?

At the minute my water temp is between 74 and 76 degrees and that is after a 20 litre water change (80 litre tank)9.45am.

I have seen mention of putting ice packs in there but won't these drop the temp too much and stress the fish?

If not, we have a couple of thick ice packs, would it be ok to put one of those in later when the temp will prob rise to about 78 deg plus (water temp)?

Apparently they can survive up to 90F (32C) but I would try to keep it below 80F (26C)

Remember that as water gets warmer it holds less oxygen so it might be worth increasing the flow of your filter if you can or adding an extra air stone just in case.

Wow! It's hot!

Just checked the tank and it had gone up to 82 degrees and that is in a room without direct sunlight and the curtains half closed!

I put one of the frozen blocks in from the cool bag and it brought it down to 74/76 degrees within a minute.

I also added and extra airstone, that makes 3 airstones and one 12" airstone. Should be fine now, if not I shall just put the icepack back in.

I would recommend buying an ice block to anyone having trouble with their tank temp.

You have to be very very careful when uing ice to drop the temperature, a temperature change of 5oC or more can kill fish, i wouldnt reckon using ice, as long as theres enough oxygen the fish will be fine.

Turn off electrial equipment (from the mains) near the tank which isnt needed to avoid heat from the equipment.

Thanks for the advice, don't think I shall use that way again then. Shall stick to just doing water changes and leave the extra airstone in.

Goldfish can tolerate tropical temperatures within reason as long as there is enough oxygen/aireation so wouldn't worry too much, will do more damage lowering the temperature too quickly

In addition to the water changes, and airstones, you may want to position a fan so it blows across the surface of the water, as this'll help to lower the temp, just be careful of the evaporation, and make sure that the water levels don't get too low

There is an article on fancy goldfish in the Practical Fishkeeping mag that is out now (I assume it is the July issue).

A fella in there has a fish farm and breeds fancies and says they can live quite happily in temps up to 100 degrees!
