Yes that is sodium bicarbonate :)
I plan to start looking into aquarium medicines from a pharmacist point of view for you all, but at the moment I'm snowed under with full-time work and then also having to learn / train in my own time. Hopefully I'll be able to enlighten you all to some degree! |

Thanks for reply everyone! I've been too busy to get online thanks to school.
I've been to several pharmacy, they all know about espom salt but none of them have it, they said it was too unpopular to be sold. And just this morning, a pharmacist suggested me to ask my chemical teacher in my school where to buy it cause normally chemical shop for education has more chemicals than pharmacy or general stores. I've to wait till monday to ask my teacher, is it Mg(SO3)2 right? I've got an old 60l tank btw and filled it with coral. I'm using it to treat new water for water changes atm. The problem is should I take all the corals out and let them dry or just leave it in there after using. For my pH buffer, the ingredient is written in chineese so i gave up. But it said that maximum pH it can raise is 8.5 |

You should keep it full of coral and water with the filter running to circulate the water all the time as it's slow to dissolve and even a full week between water changes probably won't have a huge efect.
You'll need to use both gH and kH buffering as well, as the coral won't be enough and you won't have enough water for even one partial change in the 60 litre tank. If you have a lot of coral in there it will greatly reduce the amount of actual water by displacement. |

FL,
It's a tempoary solution until I can find Espom salt, it's really uncommon here. A filter? How about a power head? I have a spare unused power head. It's not enough for water change so I have to mix it with regular water, at least it will lower the fluctuation. |

A powerhead will do fine. You need the water circulating to maximise the dissolution of the carbonates into the water.
To confirm, these are the compounds you will need to source: Epsom Salts, also known as Magnesium Sulfate - MgSO4 for gH plus Bicarbonate of Soda, also known as Sodium Bicarbonate or Baking Soda - NaHCO3 for alkalinity and pH If you can't get the Epsom Salts you can use Calcium Carbonate - CaCO3 as an alternative for gH |

CaCO3 is definitely easier to get. This shouldn't be so hard, thanks FL
