HI, Ive just recently got some Frozen Bloodworms however as the person who I ordered them from didnt send them special delivery he sent them via Second class there for by the time they have arrived they are defrosted.
So the questions is, is it safe to refreeze the lot or is it too late and have to throw them away ? Thanks for any help |

I think it's okay to re-freeze. The problem is how long has it been defrosted.
If it defrosted but still cold then it's okay. I often freeze my own live food as it's much cheaper than buying xD |

Critch,
I Don't know too but for mine, I do it all the time. I don't have small cube mold so when I feed my fish, I have to defrost the whole thing then take out some and put them back into the freezer. Just make sure it's dry and put them back in while they're still cold. Dragon3833, The live food I usually do with is mosquito larvae. When I got them, I run them through tap water for a few time then boil them in hot water to sterilize them, not so long though. Then I use hair dryer to dry them up (will take sometime) and finally freeze them. I don't know if this work on blood worm but it will work with tubiflex |

I have consulted my daughter who has A*s in food tech
and she's with Critch.Food you get raw or cooked you can freeze for the first time yourself. Any raw frozen food can be defrosted, cooked and then refrozen once. Any other frozen food which has defrosted must be eaten that day or thrown away. So unless you are going to cook the bloodworm (where is the being sick smilie) it would def be safer to chuck it - and even if you were going to cook it if it's been defrosted for longer than a day I wouldn't! TBH I wouldn't risk buying frozen food by post unless they are packing it in insulating polystyrene with dry ice and sending it by overnight delivery. ps @nathangoudie: shave bits off your frozen block with a razor or very sharp knife according to the size of the block rather than defrosting and refreezing |

If I buy frozen fish food by mail order I do refreeze under specific conditions: must be still very cold or partially frozen, seals must be completely intact and undamaged, food must be gamma-irradiated. On that basis I reckon it's safe as the irradiation should have killed all nasties and if the seals are uncompromised there ought to be no danger. I would never fully thaw, open the pack and refreeze part though as once opened and handled it will be contaminated.
No adverse effects from this policy so far ![]() |

Cathie,
Thanks for the suggestion Cathie, I'll try to find some sharp knife use for fish food preparation only... It really nasty sticking a knife into those things, If it ever happened I'd never use that knife for cooking again! lol |

I'm with fishlady, the reason many foods advise you not to refreeze is because of the effect on texture and colour of meat etc.
As long as the product is in 'safe' order it would be safe but maybe not as premium quality. The fish won't care. Obviously if it has got warm or been exposed to any source of bacteria which have caused it to go off chuck it. JON |
