i think it's better that i just don't talk to Emma here.

Thanks for the help. I can't really think of anyone who could give the fish a better home, my Mum's flat is too small. would a large foodsafe fish box be ok as a long term solution? or are they just good for temporary?

Hi, ASDA do a 110L box for around £10. It's food safe so will be fine long term, but these need to be handled with care and kept on a stable surface.

I am going to add this here.

Animal Welfare Act 2006.

"The Animal Welfare Act makes owners and keepers responsible for ensuring that the welfare needs of their animals are met. (And YES this does now include fish)

These include the need:

For a suitable environment (place to live) (A big enough tank for the fish to grow to adult size)
For a suitable diet
To exhibit normal behaviour patterns
To be housed with, or apart from, other animals (if applicable)
To be protected from pain, injury, suffering and disease

Anyone who is cruel to an animal, or does not provide for its welfare needs, may be banned from owning animals, fined up to £20,000 and/or sent to prison."

So if you cannot provide an animal with all of the above then you shouldn't be keeping that animal.

If you are in university would you keep a great Dane in the halls of residence or student digs? No? Then why not give the fish them same concerns. This has nothing to do with any qualifications, I know a young lad who suffers with Severe Learning Difficulties with an IQ of 52 who looks after his fish a lot lot better then a lot of people who have been to university and have impressive degrees.

So the question is, whilst you are in university should you have any pet, or should you wait until you leave so that you can give the animal the time and space required to care for it properly...?

I wish it was actually upheld here.

My nearest fish shop still sells goldfish bowl kits and baby pangesus catfish. They also actively promote fish in cycling.

How can individuals be expected to care for their animals properly if they are being given such poor advice?

I know it's early - back from a night out but can't sleep which is unusual cos i'm usually gone as soon as my head hits the pillow when i've been drinking lol. Just a quick question - are there benefits to getting plants for my fishies other than just looking nice? Also are any plants not good for goldfish?
