Actually I'm a fool, I think I've just noticed a way to shorten the pipe looking at a photo on my phone 

Looking at the pics, your spraybar is too low. Just move it up so it's just below the water surface with the jets pointing slightly upwards, or place it above the water line with the jets pointing slightly down. It needs to be positioned so that the flow breaks the water surface.

I might need to get a couple of suckers to hold it a bit higher, there is a vertical tube near the top which I thought I might be able to remove before the angle but I'm not sure if it will fit together then.
