Hey everyone,

My fishless cycle was going really well until two days ago when my Fluval 4 gave up the ghost and died on me. I've got a new one coming tomorrow but wanted to know whether my fishless cycle will have been affected. I also have plants in there that I'm concerned about. I took the sponge out of the canister and wrung it out into the tank to try and keep the bacteria going - will it be okay? And will a new filter mess things up? Hoping you can help x

Hi, the good bacteria requires oxygenated running water to develop so will have been affected if the filter has stopped. On the Fluval U4 the impellor is notorious for getting blocked up and stopping the filter, have you removed the impellor and cleaned it out? I assume other Fluval internals are similar.

Mine used to do this it drove me nuts!

JON

Hi

If the filter has been down for a few days then it's likely you will experience some stalling as you will have lost some of the bacteria, but it should catch up again so don't worry. It will still get there, just a bit later than anticipated

Eheim Aquaballs are more trusty than Fluvals IME.

Hi John thanks for your reply. Its actually the canister that's the problem - the motor works fine but the canister won't draw water, no matter what I've tried it just won't fill up. None of the intake vents are blocked either..its bizarre.

Thanks Violet, I guess I'll get there eventually with it. I'll take a look at Eheims too x

Leave the sponge floating in the tank, and put it in the new filter when you get it, hopefully a lot of the bacteria will have survived :)

Thanks Rayemond and everyone else who helped. The filter arrived yesterday and the water's cleared really well. I'll be testing tonight to see what's going on bacteria wise, eek!

Excellent!

Hopefully not too much of a set back for you then.

No it wasn't thankfully. My Ammonia level dropped down last night and I'm back on the tank heaven track : )
