Just read your water parameters in the first post .
Your nitrite is 10 and your nitrate is 0
your nitrite should be 0

Ooh - well spotted Jason. Is that a typo Heather or are those the real readings?

Tut tut suey for saying the water readings all look good.
Easy to miss that one so will let you off with a tap on the back of your hand lol .
Yes . Can you check those parameters again and make sure you got them right as high nitrite may be your problem

*slopes off in shame, head hung low* Yes, oops - classic case of reading what I thought it said and not what it actually said.

Been watching this thread for a few days and unfortunately, I have no pearls of wisdom to add at all.

The only thing I can see, given the pics on this thread and on the home page, is quite a lot of what looks like white slime on the gravel/substrate. Is this related or is that just the flash on the camera perhaps and a trick of the eye?

So sorry.

Hi Heather - let's just go back to basics for a moment so we can be sure we are covering everything, apologies if this is repeating stuff you've already told us or teaching you to suck eggs or just seems massively patronising (!) but let's give it a whirl and see if we can spot anything

When you do water changes do you use dechlorinator and if so which one?

How often do you do water changes and how much do you change?

Do you clean the filter in tank water or tap water?

How often do you clean the filter?

Do you use a gravel vac?

What does the tank smell like? It should smell sort of like damp earth or an algae smell, anything else (especially a rotten egg smell) would be suspicious.

Does the filter media smell of anything other than damp earth/algae?

Some of the substrate looks like it is quite big - is is possible for food etc. to get trapped in it?

Your plants look like plastic ones - is this right and do you have any live plants?

Do you have readings for KH and GH? I'd guess you have hard water if your PH is in the sevens but it would be good to know.

What is your tap water nitrate?

Is the stuff on the back of the tank just algae?

Remind me when it was that the fish first became ill?

What was it that alerted you to the problem? Was it immediate or did it develop slowly?

Have the fish improved at all and then gone back to being ill?

What have you done since starting this thread? Water changes, adding anything etc?

How are their poos? A bit gross I know but please could you describe them?

Do they ever open and close their mouths really quickly and sort of reverse a bit at the same time?

FX we should be able to sort this somehow

hi suey
i dont mind answering any thing that may help so here goes ..
i always use aqua safe to treat my water before adding it to the tank
i do regular water changes once a week of 20-25%
when i have cleaned the filter i do it in tank water ..only rinse it out bout once a month
i have a gravel vac and use it once a week
my tank has a smell of damp earth i would say!!
filter media smells the same.
some of the substrate is large its from my original biorb i had when i first set up 2 yrs ago then upgraded as soon as i was told they are no good for any fish..this is my second actual tank ..i had the 30l biorb when i first got my fish when they were tiny ..then upgraded to i think 120l then to this one 150l.
i only have plastic plants
i only have a backing poster on the back of the tank outside of coarse ..i have no algea!
my fish have been ill for about 4 months or so ..i first noticed one of them had a few white tufty bits and a blood shot eye ..ive used in the past... melafix , pimafix, methylene blue, king british disease clear ,interpet anti fungas nad finrot treatment ..and my most recent treatment was furan 2 ...and between each treatment ive left a while and put carbon in my filter for at least 3-4 days to extract any thats left as well as doing a large or a few water changes .
i did think that after the furan 2 they looked a bit better but no not realy they both got white flufty bits bloodshot eyes and ones tail is goin opaque and occasionally shows signs of swimbladder .. i give them a couple of peas and that sorts her out after a while ..i give them peas every other day and feed once a day with a pinch of gold japan mini sinking sticks.
normally there poos are the colour of the food apart from when they have peas and then its green ...but sometimes its clear and maybe bubbly !!!
i hope you can make sense of this and it may give you an idea of perhaps whats going on ..i have tried so hard to look after my fish well ..and have learnt such alot from people on here ..i hope you can help me ..i feel so sorry for them they look so sad.. which makes me sad ...i used to watch them for ages but now i dont like looking at them cos it upsets me to much .

thanks
and hoping the above will help you maybe help them

Heather

Thanks for that info Heatherr, there's nothing that really leaps out at me though unless it's so screamingly obvious I'm not seeing it Your maintenance and feeding sound fine.

I've been through my goldfish book and there are things it could be, the symptoms could be made to fit this or that or the other.

Salt can be used as a medication - it shouldn't be used as a matter of course or added all the time but if used as you would use a medication it has its place.

In the abscence of a definite diagnosis, and I do like to find a diagnosis if possible - means we can get the right med and zap the problem quickly, I think your best bet is a good water change and then a 0.3% salt solution in the tank. This means add 3 grams of salt per litre of water. Might sound a lot but it's worth a try Add half the salt one day and the rest the following day and make sure to dissolve it fully in a jug of tank water before you add it.

Proper aquarium salt is ideal but failing that you can use rock salt or sea salt as long as there are no anti-caking agents. I use Waitrose coarse sea salt or coarse rock salt.

HTH
